Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at bottom of skirt, with circular needle cast on 400 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. 1st rnd: K 61, (p 8, k 2) 7 times, p 8, k 122, (p 8, k 2) 7 times, p 8, k 61. Repeat the 1st rnd until piece measures 3 inches. Then dec. 1 st in each of the wide ribs of front and back panels on next rnd and every 5½ inches thereafter until 37 sts remain in each panel; at the same time, when piece measures 20 inches, dec. 4 sts at equal distances apart in each of the stockinette st sections (328 sts on needle). Work straight until piece measures 22 inches in all. On next rnd and every 8th rnd thereafter, dec. 4 sts at equal distances apart in each stockinette st section only (making the usual decreases in front and back panels once more) until 256 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 29 inches, turn.

Back. 1st row: With straight needles, p across 1st 45 sts, (p 2, k 3) 7 times, k 2, p 45, turn. 2nd row: K 45, (k 2, p 3) 7 times, p 2, k 45. Repeat these last 2 rows alternately, increasing 1 st in each rib where decreases were made on 1 row every 3 inches, until there are 76 sts in each panel; at the same time, when piece measures 7½ inches, shape armholes as follows: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row 10 times. Hereafter, continuing with the usual increases in panel, dec. 1 st at armhole edge at end of each row until 24 sts remain in stockinette st at both sides of panel but, when piece measures 5½ inches, work across 1st 62 sts, turn (thus starting back opening). Work over these 62 sts as before until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 5 sts once and 4 sts every other row until all sts are bound off. Break off. Attach yarn at base of opening and work opposite side to correspond.

Front. Work exactly as for Back, until piece measures 2¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row work across to center of needle, turn (thus starting neck shaping). Hereafter work back and forth over these 68 sts, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row, and making the same increases as for Back until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Shape shoulder as before until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at neck edge and work opposite side to correspond.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 64 sts. 1st row: K 23, (p 4, k 3) twice, p 4, k 23. 2nd row: P 23, (k 4, p 3) twice, k 4, p 23. Repeat these 2 rows alternately, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 114 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 16½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 58 sts remain. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 16 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at neck edge, cast on 84 sts. 1st row: * K 3, p 4. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: * K 4, p 3. Repeat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows alternately, decreasing 1 st at end of next row and every other row until piece measures 2 inches. Then, starting at decrease edge, bind off 8 sts every other row until 16 sts remain. Bind off. Make another piece same as this, but making decreases on opposite edge.

Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew on collar as in illustration. Work a row of s c around lower edge of skirt and sleeves. Work a row of s c around edges of collar and along both sides of opening, making 3 ch-5 buttonloops on right side. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonloops.
