Cable Stitch Mittens Pattern


Materials Required—AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" WOOL FLOSS or "DAWN" SHETLAND TYPE FLOSS

1-1 oz. Ball Red.

1-1 oz. Ball White.

1 Pr. Bone Knitting Needles No. 3.

1 double pointed Knitting Needle.

1 Bone Crochet Hook No. 2 or 3.

Left Mitten (Under Sections).

With Red. Cast on 32 sts, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row.

2nd Row. * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row and repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches.

Next Row. K 1 row.

Next Row. P 1 row.

Next Row. (Beading) * K 2, yarn over, K 2 together, repeat from * across row.

Next Row. P across row.

Work in stockinette st of K 1 row, P 1 row until work measures 5 inches from the beginning ending with the P row.

Next Row. K 24, place remaining 8 sts on a st holder or thread for thumb.

Work even in stockinette st for 3¼ more inches ending with the P row.

Next Row. * K 4, K 2 together, repeat from * across row and work 3 rows even.

Next Row. * K 3, K 2 together, repeat from * across row and work 3 rows even. Repeat the last 4 rows.

Next Row. * K 1, K 2 tog, repeat from * across row ending with K 1 and work 1 row even.

Next Row. K 2 tog 4 times, K 1, break yarn leaving an end, thread into needle and draw through sts, fasten firmly.

Thumb. Pick up the 8 sts from holder or thread and work in stockinette st for 2¼ inches.

Next Row. K 1, K 2 tog, K 1, K 2 tog, K 2.

Next Row. P 1 row.

Next Row. K 2 tog 3 times and fasten off same as top of mitten.

(Top Section) With White. Work same as Red section including the beading row then P 1 row.

Next Row. Start cable st pattern. ** K 16, P 2, slip the next 2 sts on a double pointed needle and hold in back of work, K the next 2 sts, then K the 2 sts on spare needle, P 2, K 8.

Next Row. * P 8, K 2, P 4, K 2, P 16.

Next Row. K 16, P 2, K 4, P 2, K 8.

Repeat from * once.

Next Row. P 8, K 2, P 4, K 2, P 16, then repeat from ** until work measures 5 inches from the beginning ending with the P row.

Next Row. K 8 and place these sts on st holder or thread and work on remaining sts same as palm side of mitten, keeping the cable st pattern for 3¼ inches from thumb, then drop the cable st at center, decrease and finish same as other section.

Work thumb same as Red section.

With Red crochet the sections together with a row of s c. Crochet a ch about 15 inches long and lace through beading, finish with pom-poms.

Work other mitten to correspond reversing the thumb.
