Man About Town Sweater Pattern

SIZES 8 (10-12-14).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 8, the second for size 10, the third for size 12, the fourth for size 14.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN CANDOUR 2 (2-2-3) skeins; 1 24-inch circular needle No. 2; 1 24-inch circular needle No. 4; 1 set double point needles No. 2; 1 set double point needles No. 4.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 26½ (28-30-32) inches; bottom to underarm 12 (12½-13-14) inches; sleeves to under­arm 13 (14-14¾-15½) inches.

GAUGE—7 sts. = 1 inch. 10 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Stockinette St. (knit when working around; knit 1 row, purl 1 row, when working back and forth). Neck, waist and wrist bands—ribbing of K2, P2.

Working back and forth on two No. 4 double point needles, cast on 42 (44-48-50) sts. Purl 1 row. Then work raglan seams as follows: Knit 1 (front), inc. 1, slip a marker on needle, inc. 1, K2 (sleeve), inc. 1, slip a marker on needle, inc. 1, K28 (30-34-36), (back), inc. 1, slip a marker on needle, inc. 1, K2 (sleeve), inc. 1, slip a marker on needle, inc. 1, K1 (front). Purl every other row, until work is joined. On every knit row, inc. 1 st. before and after each marker; (always slipping markers from one nee­dle to the other) (8 sts. inc. every knit row). AT SAME TIME, inc. 1 st. at beg. and end of needle on every knit row 7 (8-9-9) times; (120 (132-146-148) sts.). Cast on 12 (12-14-16) sts. for center front of neck and join. Divide sts. on 3 double point needles, join and knit 1 round even. From this point knit round and round inc. at 4 raglan seams every other round in same manner as before and knitting 1 round plain between inc. rounds in place of the purl rows before work was joined. When there are too many sts. on double point needles, change to No. 4 circular needle. Continue to work even until raglan measures 6½ (7-7½-8) inches. Divide work as follows: knit across left front and place these sts. on holder. Knit across left sleeve and place these sts. on holder. Knit across back and place these sts. on holder. Work across right sleeve and slip remaining sts. onto holder for right front.

Working back and forth in stockinette st., (knit 1 row, purl 1 row), cast on 2 sts. at the beg. of each of first 2 rows; (68 (70-74-78) sts. on needle). Work 1½ (1¾-1¾-2) inches even. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle. Repeat this dec. every 2 inches; 5 (5-6-6) times more; (56 (58-60-64) sts. When sleeve measures 11¼ (12-12½-13½) inches from underarm or 2½ inches shorter than desired length, on next row dec. 8 (10-8-12) sts., at even intervals across row. Change to No. 2 needles and work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2½ inches. Bind off loosely. Work other sleeve to correspond. Sew sleeve seams.

BODY—Slip back and front sts. from holders onto circular needle and join yarn; (188 (196-212-224) sts. on needle). Knit round and round for 9½ (10-10½-11) inches from start. Change to No. 2 circular needle and work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2½ (2¾-3-3) inches. Bind off loosely.

NECKBAND—Using No. 2 double point needles, pick up 100 (100-104-104) sts. around neck. Join, work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 1 inch. Bind off loosely.
