Minx Sweater Set Pattern

SIZES—2 (3-4).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 2, the second for size 3, the third for size 4.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN HEAVEN SPUN 6 (7-8) balls; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 1; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 2; 1 set double point needles No. 1; 6 small pearl buttons.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 21 (22-23) inches; bottom to underarm 8 (8½-9) inches; sleeve to underarm 9 (10-11) inches.

GAUGE—8½ sts. = 1 inch. 12 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Body—Row 1—*K3, P3, repeat from * across row. Row 2—Purl across row. Row 3—*P3, K3, repeat from * across row. Row 4—Purl. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern. Beg. and ending of rows will vary according to size. Waist, neck and wrist bands—Ribbing of K1, P1.

SLIPOVERBACK—Using No. 1 Needles, cast on 90 (94-98) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1¼ (1½-1½) inches. Change to No. 2 Needles and work as follows: For Size 2 Only: Row 1—*K3, P3, repeat from * across row. Rows 2 and 4—Purl. Row 3—*P3, K3, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 4 rows throughout for pattern. For Size 3 Only: Dec. 1 st. to make 93 sts., then work in pattern as follows: Row 1—*K3, P3, re­peat from * across row, ending K3. Rows 2 and 4—Purl. Row 3—*P3, K3, repeat from * across row, ending P3. Repeat these 4 rows throughout for pattern. For Size 4 Only: Dec. 1st. each end of needle on last row of ribbing to make 96 sts. then work in pattern as for size 2. Work even in pattern until back measures 8 (8½-9) inches from start. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 4 sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 3 times; (76 (79-82) sts.). Work even in pattern until armhole measures 4¼ (4½-4½) inches straight up from under­arm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 rows, bind off 8 sts. Place remaining 28 (31-34) sts. on holder to be worked later.

FRONT—Work in same manner as back until armhole measures 3 (3¼-3½) inches straight up from underarm. Work first 27 sts. in pattern for left shoulder; work center 22 (25-28) sts. and place on holder for front of neck. On last 27 sts., work back and forth in pattern, dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row 3 times. Work even until armhole measures 4¼ (4½-4½) inches straight up from under­arm. At beg. of arm edge, bind off 8 sts. 3 times. Work left shoulder to correspond.

SLEEVES—Using No. 1 needles, cast on 44 (46-48) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1½ (1½-1¾) inches. For Size 2 Only: Inc. 1 st. on last row of ribbing. For Size 3 Only: Inc. 2 sts. on last row of ribbing; (45 (48-48) sts. on needle). Change to No. 2 needles and work in pattern as on fronts, inc. 1 st. each end of needle every ½ inch, 12 (13-14) times; (69 (74-76) sts.). Work even until sleeve measures 9 (10-11) inches from bottom. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 4 (5-5) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row for 2½ (2¾-2¾) inches. Then at the beg. of each of the next 6 (6-8) rows, bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, matching underarm seams. Using No. 1 double point needles, pick up 92 (94-96) sts. around neck. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for ¾ inch. Bind off loosely.

CARDIGANBACK—Using No. 1 needles, cast on 90 (94-98) sts. Work in same manner as back of Slipover until back measures 8½ (9-9½) inches from start. Shape armholes in same manner as on Slipover; (76 (79-82) sts.). Work even until armhole measures 4¼ (4¾-4¾) inches straight up from underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 rows, bind off 8 sts. Place remaining 28 (31-34) sts. on holder to be worked later for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT—Using No. 1 needles, cast on 51 (53-55) sts. Work first 46 (48- 48) sts. in ribbing of K1, P1 and last 5 (5-7) sts. in garter st. (knit every row) for front border, for 1¼ (1½-1½) inches. Change to No. 2 needles and work as fol­lows: For Size 2 Only: Dec. 1 st. at arm edge on last row of ribbing, then work in pattern as follows: Row 1—*K3, P3, repeat from * to last 8 sts., K8. Rows 2 and 4—K5, purl to end of row. Row 3—*P3, K3, repeat from * to last 8 sts., P3, K5. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern. For Size 3 Only: Row 1—*K3, P3, repeat from * to last 5 sts., K5. Rows 2 and 4—Purl to end of row. Row 3—*P3, K3, repeat from * to last 8 sts., K8. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern. For Size 4 Only: Work as for size 3, having 7 sts. for border instead of 5. Work even in pattern until front measures 8½ (9-9½) inches from start. At arm edge, bind off 5 sts. Dec. 1 st. at arm edge every other row 3 times. Work even until armhole measures 3¼ (3½-4) inches straight up from under­arm. Slip 15 (18-20) sts. at neck edge onto holder to be worked later. On re­maining 27 sts., dec. 1 st. at neck edge, every other row 3 times. Work even until armhole measures 4¼ (4¾-4¾) inches straight up from underarm. At beg. of arm edge, bind off 8 sts. 3 times.

RIGHT FRONT—Work to correspond with left front, reversing shaping, making a buttonhole as follows: ½ (¾-¾) inch from bottom; starting at front edge, K2, bind off 2 (2-3) sts. and finish row in pattern. On next row, cast on 2 (2-3) sts. over those bound off on previous row. Repeat this buttonhole every 2¼ (2½-2¾) inches 5 times more; (6 buttonholes in all). Last buttonhole will come in neck ribbing.

SLEEVES—Work same as Slipover sleeves.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, matching underarm seams. Using No. 1 needles, pick up 91 (93-95) sts. around neck. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for ¾ inch, keeping 5 (5-7) sts. each end of needle in garter st. Be sure to make last buttonhole 2¼ (2½-2¾) inches above previous one. Bind off loosely. Work around each buttonhole in buttonhole st. Sew buttons in place on left front.
