Snow Fairy Outfit Pattern

SIZES 3 (4-5).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 3, the second for size 4, the third for size 5.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN MARVEL TWIST 7 (8-8) skeins; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 3; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 5; 1 set double point needles No. 3; 1 set double point needles No. 5; 1 Bone Crochet Hook No. F; 5 buttons 1 inch in diameter.

MEASUREMENTS—Waist 20½ (21-22) inches; chest 22 (23-24) inches; blouse to underarm 10 (11-12) inches; sleeves, including cuffs 9 (10½-11½) inches; outside pants seam, including cuff 24 (25-26) inches.

GAUGE—6 sts. = 1 inch. 8 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Stockinette St. (knit 1 row, purl 1 row). Ankle, waist and wrist bands—ribbing of K1, P1.

SNOWPANTS—Using No. 3 needles, cast on 72 (76-80) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and knit 1 row, inc. 1 st. in every 6th (7th-8th) st., 12 (10-10) times across row; (84 (86-90) sts.). Work even in stockinette st., until work measures 6½ (7-7) inches, from start. Inc. 1 st. at the beg. of each of the next 14 (16-16) rows; (98 (102-106) sts.). Work 2 rows even. Dec. 1 st. at the beg. of each of the next 14 (16-16) rows; (84 (86-90) sts.). Work 1 inch even. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every 6th row 10 (11-12) times; (64 (64-66) sts.). Work 5 (5-7) rows even. On next row dec. 16 (14-14) sts. at even intervals (48 (50-52) sts.). Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 4½ inches. Bind off loosely. Work other leg to correspond.

SUSPENDERS—Make 2. Using No. 3 needles, cast on 8 sts. K 1 row, inc. 1 st. in every st. across row; (16 sts.). Then work as follows: *K1, yarn to front of work, slip next st. as if to purl, yarn to back of work, repeat from * across row, ending yarn to front of work, slip next st. as if to purl. Repeat this row until piece measures 18 inches, or desired length to fit over child's shoulders to back of snow pants. Bind off as follows: K 2 tog., *K 2 tog., pass first st. over second and re­peat from * across row.

JACKETBACK—Using No. 5 nee­dles, cast on 76 (78-82) sts. Work in stockinette st. for 4 (4½-4¾) inches. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette st. until back measures 10 (11-12) inches from start or desired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 5 (4-4) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 3 times; (60 (64-68) sts.). Work even until armhole measures 4½ (4¾-5) inches straight up from underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 (8-8) rows, bind off 6 (5-5) sts. Bind off remaining 24 (24-28) sts. for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT—Cast on 28 (30-30) sts., using No. 5 needles. Work even in stockinette st. for 4 (4½-4¾) inches. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette st. until front measures same as back to armhole. At beg. of arm edge, bind off 5 sts. Dec. 1 st. at arm edge every other row 3 times. Work even until armhole measures 4 (4¼-4½) inches straight up from underarm. At neck edge, dec. 1 st. every other row twice. When armhole measures 4½ (4¾-5) inches straight up from underarm, at beg. of arm edge, bind off 6 (5-5) sts. 3 (4-4) times.

RIGHT FRONT—Using No. 5 nee­dles, cast on 52 (54-56) sts. and work to correspond to left front, reversing shap­ing, until armhole measures 3½ (3¾-4) inches straight up from underarm; (44 (46-48) sts.). At neck edge, K 4 (4-6) sts., bind off next 20 sts. and on 20 (22- 22) sts. left, dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row twice. Work even until armhole measures 4½ (4¾-5) inches straight up from underarm. At beg. of arm edge bind off 6 (5-5) sts., 3 (4-4) times. On last 4 sts. dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row twice, then bind off remain­ing sts.

SLEEVES—Using No. 3 needles, cast on 40 (40-44) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 3 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and stockinette st., inc. 1 st. in every 3rd st. across 1 row; (53 (53-58) sts.). Work even until sleeve measures 10 (11½-13) inches from start or desired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 5 (5-6) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row until 29 (29-32) sts. remain on nee­dle. At the beg. of each of the next 6 rows, bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining 17 (17-20) sts.

FINISHING—Sew leg seams of pants. Sew center front and back seams. Sew suspenders in place on top of waist rib­bing. Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, matching underarm seams. Work 6 rows of S. C. up right front, making 5 buttonholes at even intervals on 4th row by ch. 3 and skip 3. Be sure to space buttonholes so the 2nd from bottom comes in center of waist ribbing. Starting on right front neck, on inside of front border, work 4 rows of S. C. around neck, to last dec. on left front neck, decreasing 7 sts. at even intervals across front of neck, and 5 sts. across back of neck on first row. Starting at right side seam, work 1 row of S. C. around entire jacket, making a button loop of ch. 3 on side of neck band next to front border. Sew buttons in place on left front and on side of neckband in back.

HELMET—Using No. 5 double point needles, cast on 4 sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1, casting on 2 sts. at the beg. of each of the next 6 rows. Work 12 rows even in ribbing. Place these 16 sts. on holder and make another piece in same manner. Do not put this piece on a holder but cast on 24 sts. (for back of neck), work in ribbing of K1, P1 across 16 sts. of first ear piece, cast on 44 sts. (for front of cap), join, being careful not to twist sts. (100 sts.). Divide on 3 nee­dles (36 sts. on each of 2 needles, 28 sts. on 3rd needle). Work round and round in ribbing for 16 (18-20) rounds. Dis­continue ribbing. K1 round even, on next round dec. 4 sts. at even intervals (96 sts.), K3 (3-3) rounds even. *K10, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. K3 (4-4) rounds even. *K9, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. Knit 3 rounds even. *K8, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. From now on, dec. in this manner every other round, having 1 st. less between dec. after each dec. round, until 8 sts. remain. Break off yarn and draw through these 8 sts. Fasten off.

FINISHING—Work 1 row of S. C. all around ear flaps and cap. Using double yarn, make a loose chain about 10 inches long. Work in slip st. across this chain. Scroll this tie on outside of ear flap and sew in place. Make a tassel and sew on other end of tie. Make a second tie for other side of cap.

MITTENSRIGHT HAND—Using No. 3 double point needles, cast on 36 sts. and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 20 (22-24) rows. For Size 3 only: Knit 1 row, dec. as follows: *K7, K2 tog., re­peat from * for 1 round—32 sts. Change to No. 5 needles and work as follows: Round 1—K19 (22-22) sts., P1, K6, P1, K5 (6-6) sts. Round 2—K19 (22-22) sts., P1, slip next 3 sts. onto double point nee­dle and hold in front of work, K next 3 sts., K sts. from double point needle (this is a cable twist), P1, K5 (6-6) sts. Round 3—Repeat round 1. Round 4—Inc. 1 st. in each of first 2 sts., K17 (20-20), P1, K7, P1, K5 (6-6) sts. Round 5—K21 (24-24), P1, K6, P1, K5 (6-6) sts. Round 6—Inc. 1, K2, inc. 1, K17 (20-20), P1, K6, P1, K5 (6-6) sts. Round 7—K23 (26-26), P1, K6, P1, K5 (6-6) sts. Round 8—Inc. 1, K4, inc. 1, K17 (20-20), P1, K6, P1, K5 (6-6). Continue in this man­ner to inc. for thumb every other round, having 2 more sts. in thumb after each inc. AT THE SAME TIME, twist cable on 6 sts., on 10th round and then every 8th round thereafter. When there are 8 (10-10) sts. between inc. sts., (42 (48-48) sts.), work as follows: K2, slip next 8 (10-10) sts. onto holder, cast on 2 sts. in their place and work to end of round; (36 (40-40) sts.). Work even in pattern for 14 (16-16) rounds. Dec. as follows: slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K14 (16-16), K2 tog., slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K3 (4-4), P1, K6, P1, K3 (4-4), K2 tog. Work 1 round even in pattern. Then slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K12 (14-14), K2 tog., slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K2 (3-3), P1, K6, P1, K2 (3-3), K2 tog. Work 1 round even. Con­tinue in this manner to dec. 4 sts. every other round until 12 (16-16) sts. remain. Place 6 (8-8) sts. of front and back on two needles. Weave these sts. tog.

THUMB—Slip 4 (5-5) sts. to each of 2 needles. Join yarn, pick up 4 sts. over the 2 sts. cast on for palm. Dec. 1 st. over the 4 sts. picked up every row twice; (10 (12-12) sts.). K7 (9-9) rounds even. Dec. as follows: For Size 3 only: *K3, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. K 1 round even. *K2, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. K 1 round even. *K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. Break yarn, draw through all sts. and fasten off. For Sizes 4 & 5 only: *K2, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. K 1 round even. *K1, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. K 1 round even. *K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round and finish as for size 3.

LEFT HAND—Work in same manner as right hand. After changing to No. 5 needles, set up pattern as follows: Round 1—K5 (6-6), P1, K6, P1, K19 (22-22). Round 2—K5 (6-6), P1, twist cable on next 6 sts., P1, K19 (22-22). Round 3—Repeat round 1. Round 4—K5 (6-6), P1, K6, P1, K17 (20-20), inc. in each of last 2 sts. to start thumb. From this point work to correspond with right hand.
