Jack Frost Sport Yarn---2 2-oz. Balls

1 oz. Contrasting Color

NOTE: Colors will be referred to as follows: Main Color--M C; Contrasting color--CC. Always be sure to twist yarns once when changing colors, to avoid making a hole.

With MC cast on 57 sts. Knit 3 rows, than purl 1 row. Following the chart, work as follows:

Row 1--* Knit 1 MC, 1 CC; repeat from * across row ending with 1 MC.

Row 2--Purl with MC.

Row 3--Knit 5 MC, 1 CC, 5 MC, 1 CC, 13 MC, 1 CC, 5 MC, 1 CC, 13 MC, 1 CC, 5 MC, 1 CC, 5 MC.

Row 4--Purl 5 MC, 2 CC, 3 MC, 2 CC, 13 MC, 2 CC, 3 MC, 2 CC, 13 MC, 2 CC, 3 MC, 2 CC, 5 MC.

Continue working as given above, following the chart, until cuff has been completed, ending with a purl row of MC. Knit 3 rows MC, then continuing with MC, K 1 row, increasing to 58 sts at even intervals across row. Work even in stockinette st (P 1 row, K 1 row,) until piece measures 4 in. from cuff ending with a purl row.

HEEL: Knit 15. Place remaining 43 sts on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 15 sts for 26 rows ending with a purl row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1--K 2, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 3; turn.

Row 3--K 3, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 4; turn.

Row 5--K 4, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 5; turn.

Row 7--K 5, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 6; turn.

Row 9--K 6, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 7; turn.

Row 11--K 7, K 2 tog., K 1 (9 sts).

Pick up and knit 13 sts on side of heel. Place the 43 sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and knit across 28 instep sts. Place the 50 sts just worked on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 15 remaining heel sts for 27 rows, ending with a knit row. Turn 2nd half of heel as follows:

Row 1--P 2, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 3; turn.

Row 3--P 3, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 4; turn.

Row 5--P 4, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 5; turn.

Continue working in the above manner until 9 sts remain, ending with P 7, P 2 tog., P 1. Pick up and purl 13 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and purl across row (72 sts).

INSTEP SHAPING:

Row 1--K 20, K 2 tog., K 28, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 20.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3--K 19, K 2 tog., K 28, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 19.

Row 5--K 18, K 2 tog., K 28, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 18.

Continue decreasing as given above until 56 sts remain. Work back and forth in stockinette st until foot measures 2 in. less than desired length, measuring from back of heel. Decrease for toe as follows:

Row 1--K 11, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 22, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 11.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3--K 10, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 20, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 10.

Row 5--K 9, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 18, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 9.

Continue decreasing as given above until 20 sts remain. Weave tip of sock tog. (see page 15). Sew back and sole seam. Work other sock to correspond.
