Double Pointed Needle

SCALE: 6 sts to 1 in.

JACK FROST KNITTING WORSTED—3 ounces

Cast on 47 sts. Work in pattern as follows:

Row 1—K 1, P 1, over the first 10 sts; K 4; P 1, K 1, over the next 19 sts; K 4; P 1, K 1, over remaining 10 sts.

Row 2—P 1, K 1, over the first 10 sts; P 4; K 1, P 1, over the next 19 sts; P 4; K 1, P 1, over remaining 10 sts.

Repeat above 2 rows working a cable twist over the 2 ribs of K 4 on the 5th and every 6th row thereafter to heel as follows: slip the first 2 sts onto double pointed Needle, hold in back of work, K the next 2 sts, then bring the 2 slipped sts forward and K them. When ribbing measures 2 in. from lower edge, work as follows:

Row 1—(right side)—K 9, P 1, K 4, P 1, K 17, P 1, K 4, P 1, K 9.

Row 2—P 9, K 1, P 4, K 1, P 17, K 1, P 4, K 1, P 9.

Repeat above 2 rows continuing the cable twists, until piece measures 4 in. from lower edge, ending on wrong side.

HEEL: Knit 12. Place remaining 35 sts on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 12 heel sts for 16 rows ending with al purl row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1—K 1, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 2; turn.

Row 3—K 2, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 3; turn.

Row 5—K 3, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 4; turn.

Row 7—K 4, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 5; turn.

Row 9—K 5, K 2 tog., K 1 (7 sts remaining).

Pick up and knit 10 sts on side of heel. Place the 35 sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and knit across the 23 instep sts. Place the 40 sts just worked, on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the remaining 12 heel sts for 17 rows, ending with a knit row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1—P 1, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 2; turn.

Row 3—P 2, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 3; turn.

Row 5—P 3, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 4; turn.

Row 7—P 4, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 5; turn.

Row 9—P 5, P 2 tog., P 1 (7 sts remaining).

Pick up and purl 10 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and purl across row (57 sts).

INSTEP SHAPING:

Row 1—K 15, K 2 tog., K 23, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 15.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3—K 14, K 2 tog., K 23, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 14.

Row 5—K 13, K 2 tog., K 23, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 13.

Continue decreasing as given above until 41 sts remain. Complete as given for Ombre socks No. 5717.
