SCALE: 6 sts to 1 in.

JACK FROST KNITTING WORSTED---3 oz.

Cast on 41 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2 in. then work in stockinette st until piece measures 4 ½ in. in all, ending with a purl row.

HEEL: Knit 11. Place remaining 30 sts on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 11 heel sts for 16 rows ending with a purl. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1—K 2, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 3; turn.

Row 3—K 3, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 4; turn.

Row 5—K 4, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 5; turn.

Row 7—K 5, K 2 tog., K 1 (7 sts remaining).

Pick up and knit 10 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and knit across the 19 instep sts. Place the 36 sts just worked, on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the remaining 11 heel sts for 17 rows ending with a knit row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1—P 2, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 3; turn.

Row 3—P 3, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 4; turn.

Row 5—P 4, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 5; turn.

Row 7—P 5, P 2 tog., P 1 (7 sts remaining).

Pick up and purl 10 sts. on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and purl across row. (53 sts).

INSTEP SHAPING:

Row 1—K 15, K 2 tog., K 19, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 15.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3—K 14, K 2 tog., K 19, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 14.

Row 5—K 13, K 2 tog., K 19, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 13.

Continue decreasing as given above until 41 sts remain.

Work even in stockinette st until foot measures 1 ¾ in. less than desired length, measuring from back of heel, ending with a purl row. Decrease toe as follows:

Row 1—K 8, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 13, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 8.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3—K 7, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 11, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 7.

Row 5—K 6, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 9, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 6.

Continue decreasing as given above until 17 sts remain.

Weave or sew tip of sock tog. Sew side and sole seams.

Work other sock to correspond.
