1 Pr. Standard No. 2 Needles

Double Pointed Needle

SCALE: 8 sts to 1 in.

JACK FROST SPORT YARN—2 2-OZ. Balls

Cast on 68 sts. Work in ribbing of K 2, P 2, for 3 in. P 1 row, increasing to 70 sts. Work in pattern as follows:

Row 1—K 4, * P 1, K 4, P 1, K 8; repeat from * across row ending K 4.

Row 2—P 4, * K 1, P 4, K 1, P 8; repeat from * across row ending P 4.

Repeat above 2 rows working a cable twist over the 5 ribs of K 4, on the 7th and every 8th row thereafter as follows: K 4, *P 1, slip next 2 sts onto double pointed Needle, hold in back of work; K the next 2 sts, then bring the slipped sts forward and knit them; P 1, K 8; repeat from * ending K 4.

Work even in pattern until piece measures 9 in. in all, ending on wrong side.

HEEL: Row 1—Slip 1, K 1, over the first 18 heel sts; place remaining 52 sts on st-holder.

Row 2—Slip 1, P 17. Repeat above 2 rows on the 18 heel sts until 26 rows in all have been made, ending with a purl row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1—K 2, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 3; turn.

Row 3—K 3, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 4; turn.

Row 5—K 4, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 5; turn.

Continue working as given above until all sts are worked; there will be 10 sts on the Needle, ending with K 9, K 2 tog.

Pick up and knit 14 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and work in pattern across the 34 instep sts. Place the 58 sts just worked, on st-holder. Work back and forth on the remaining 18 heel sts, as given for first half of heel for 27 rows ending with a slip 1, K 1, row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1—P 2, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 3; turn.

Row 3—P 3, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 4; turn.

Row 5—P 4, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 5; turn.

Continue working as given above until all sts are worked; there will be 10 sts on the Needle, ending with P 9, P 2 tog.

Pick up and purl 14 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and work across row, keeping the 34 instep sts in pattern to toe (82 sts).

INSTEP SHAPING:

Row 1—K 22, K 2 tog., pattern over 34, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 22.

Row 2 and all even rows purl, keeping pattern across the 34 instep sts to toe.

Row 3—K 21, K 2 tog., pattern over 34, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 21.

Row 5—K 20, K 2 tog., pattern over 34, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 20.

Continue decreasing as given above until 66 sts remain.

Work even until foot measures 2 in. less than desired length, measuring from back of heel, ending with a purl row. Decrease for toe as follows:

Row 1—K 14, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 26, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 14.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3—K 13, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 24, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 13.

Row 5—K 12, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 22, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 12.

Continue decreasing as given above until 26 sts remain. Weave tip of sock tog. Sew back and sole seam. Work other sock to correspond.
