SCALE: 9 sts to 1 in.
Jack Frost Fingering Fleece2 1-oz. Balls Garnet
1-1-oz. Ball Natural
1-1-oz. Ball Robin Blue
NOTE: Colors will be referred to as follows: GarnerG; NaturalN; Robin BlueR, always be sure to twist yarns once when changing colors, to avoid making a hole. Before starting pattern, wind G into 2 balls, N into 2 balls, R into 1 ball and break off 2 strands each of R and N (about 2 yds. each).
With G cast on 70 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 3 ½ in. Work in pattern as follows:
Row 1Knit 2 N15 G1 R1 N15 G2 R15 G1 N1 R15 G2 N.
Row 2Purl back with same colors.
Row 3Knit 3 N13 G1 R2 G1 N13 G4 R13 G1 N2 G1 R13 G3 N.
Row 4and all even rows purl back with same colors.
Row5Knit 4 N11 G1 R4 G1 N11 G6 R11 G1 N4 G1 R11 G4 N.
Continue in the above manner, adding 1 more st in color to the N half diamonds on each end; 2 more sts to the center R diamond; decreasing 1 st in color on each side of the 2 G diamonds, every knit row; moving the R diagonals 1 st toward the outside and the N diagonals 1 st toward the center every knit row, until sts are on the Needle at first crossing of diagonals into next colors as follows:

Row 18Purl back in same colors.
Row 19Knit 8 N1 R2 N14 G2 R1 N14 R1 N2 R14 G2 N1 R8 N.
Row 20Purl back in same colors.
Row 21Knit 7 N1 R4 N12 G4 R1 N12 R1 N4 R12 G4 N1 R7 N.
Continue working in the above manner until row 32 has been completed. On the next row, the N diagonals will cross in the center of the R diamond as follows:
Row 33Knit 1 N1 R16 N16 R2 N16 R16 N1 R1 N.
Row 34Purl back in same colors.
Row 35Knit 2 N1 R14 N2 G14 R1 N2 R1 N14 R2 G14 N1 R2 N.
Continue in the above manner, decreasing 1 st in color at each side of the center R diamond and 1 st in each N diamond, every other row until diagonals cross into next colors and sts are on Needle as follows:
Row 49Knit 9 N1 R16 G1 N16 R1 N16 G1 R9 N.
Row 50Purl back in same colors.
Row 51Knit 9 N1 G1 R14 G1 N1 G16 R1 G1 N14 G1 R1 G9 N.
Continue in pattern until the center R diamond has been completed and sts are on the Needle as follows:
Row 66Purl 2 N15 G1 R1 N15 G2 R15 G1 N1 R15 G---2 N.
Break off the N and center R balls of yarn and the 2 N strands.
HEEL: Row 1With G, slip 1, K 1, over the first 18 sts: place remaining 52 sts on st-holder.
Row 2Purl. Repeat above 2 rows on the 18 heel sts until 32 rows in all have been made, ending with a purl row. Turn this half of heel as follows:
Row 1K 2, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 3; turn.
Row 3K 3, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 4; turn.
Row 5K 4, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 5; turn.
Continue working as given above until all sts are worked; there will be 10 sts on the Needle, ending with K 9, K 2 tog.
Pick up and knit 17 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and work in pattern across the 34 instep sts as follows: 1 R15 G2 N15 G1 R. Place the 61 sts just worked, on st-holder. Work back and forth as given for first half of heel on remaining 18 sts for 33 rows, ending with a slip 1, K 1 row. Turn this half of heel as follows:
Row 1P 2, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 3; turn.
Row 3P 3, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 4; turn.
Row 5P 4, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 5; turn.
Continue working as given above until all sts worked; there will be 10 sts on the Needle, ending with P 9, P 2 tog.
Pick up and purl, 17 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and purl across row with same colors (88 sts).
INSTEP SHAPING:
Row 1With G knit 25, K 2 tog., K 1, then K 1 R, 13 G, 4 N, 13 G, 1 R, change to G and K 1, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 25.
Row 2 and all even rows purl back with same colors.
Row 3With G knit 24, K 2 tog., K 2, then K 1 R, then K 1 R, 11 G, 6 N, 11 G, 1 R, change to G and K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 24.
Row 5With G knit 23, k 2 tog., K 3, then K 1 R, 9 G, 8 N, 9 G, 1 R, change to G and K 3, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 23.
Continue decreasing in the above manner, adding 1 more st in color to each side of the N diamond across instep, moving the R diagonals 1 st toward the center, every knit row, until 70 sts remain. Work even on the 70 sts until sts are on the Needle as follows:
Knit 18 G16 N2 R16 N18 G. At this point the R diagonals will cross each other. Purl back in same colors, then continue in pattern decreasing 1 st in color on each side of the N diamond; moving the R diagonals 1 st outward, every knit row, until sts are on the Needle as follows:
Knit 26 G1 R16 N1 R26 G. Purl back in same colors.
Break off both strands of R and continue decreasing 1 st in color on each side of the N diamond, every knit row, until diamond has been completed (there will be 2 N stitches in the center of last purl row). Work back and forth in stockinette st in G only until foot measures 2 in. less than desired length, measuring from back of heel. Decrease for toe as follows:
Row 1K 15, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 28, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 15.
Row 2and all even rows purl.
Row 3K 14, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 28, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 15.
Row 5K 13, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 24, K 2 tog., K 2; slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 13.
Continue decreasing as given above until 26 sts remain. Weave tip of sock tog. (see page 15). Sew back and sole seams. Work other sock to correspond.
