Knitted Shirt and Soaker Set Pattern #5167

Infant Size

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY WOOL, 4 balls (¾ oz. balls) for set. If made separately Shirt takes 2 balls and Soaker takes 3 balls.
Milward's Casein Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 7 (4¼ mm. size).
Milward's Casein Crochet Hook No. 3, or
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0.
2 yds. of narrow ribbon.

GAUGE: (Stockinette Stitch) 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

SHIRT

FRONT … Starting at the bottom, cast on 70 sts loosely. Work as follows: 1st row: K 2, p to within last 2 sts, k 2. 2nd row: K across. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until, ending with a k row, piece measures 5 inches in all. Now work as follows: 1st row: K 9, p to within last 9 sts, k 9. 2nd row: K across. Repeat these 2 rows once more.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Work remaining 60 sts straight, keeping the first and last 4 sts in garter st, until, ending with a k row, piece measures 2½ inches from first row of armhole shaping. To shape neck, k 4, p 11, k 30, p 11, k 4. 2nd row: K across. Repeat these 2 rows once more. 5th row: K 4, p 11, k 4, bind off 22 sts, k 4, p 11, k 4. Turn and work over this last set of sts only, keeping the first and last 4 sts in garter st, for 6 rows. Bind off. Attach wool at neck edge and work other side to correspond.

BACK … Work as for Front.

FINISHING … Press lightly through damp cloth. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams.

EDGING … Attach wool at underarm, ch 3, 2 tr in same place, * skip 2 ridges, sc in next ridge, ch 2, 4 tr in same place as last sc was made. Repeat from * around armhole ending with 2 tr. Fasten off. Work other armhole to correspond. Attach wool at neck and work shell edging around. Pull ribbon through holes at base of shells around neck as in illustration.

SOAKER

Starting at waistband, cast on 140 sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 inch. Now work in garter stitch (k each row), decreasing 1 st at end of each row until all sts are worked off. Work shell edging around 2 garter stitch sides. Sew ends of ribbing at waistband. Turn point up to bottom of waistband and sew edges together, dovetailing the shells and leaving 4 inches for leg opening. Pass a narrow ribbon (or elastic) through center of waistband.
