MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 11 skeins (2 oz. skeins) for entire set. If made separately, Helmet takes 2 skeins; Jacket takes 5 skeins; Leggings take 5 skeins.
Milward's Casein Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) and 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size).
1 Crown open end zipper, 12-inch, style F. 50.
3 buttons (2 for leggings, 1 for helmet).
GAUGE: (Pattern Stitch) 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch. (Stockinette Stitch) 5½ sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.
PATTERN STITCH … (Multiple of 4 sts.) 1st row: * K 3, p 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: K 2, p 1, * k 3, p 1. Repeat from * across ending with k 1. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for pattern.
LEGGINGS
LEFT LEG … Starting at ankle, with No. 3 needles, cast on 44 sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 5 inches. Inc 34 sts evenly on last row of ribbing (78 sts on needle). Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row), increasing 1 st on both sides every inch 5 times, and thereafter every half inch 10 times (piece measures 15 inches in all and there are 108 sts on needle).
To Shape Crotch … With right side facing, right edge of piece is back crotch, and left side is front crotch. For back crotch dec as follows: Dec 1 st every inch twice, then dec 1 st every half inch 11 times.
At the Same Time
For front crotch work as follows: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of 1st row, then dec 1 st every other row 12 times. Work this edge straight until all decreases on back are made and piece measures 23 inches in all. Dec 17 sts evenly across last row. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 over remaining 60 sts for 2 inches. Bind off in ribbing.
RIGHT LEG … Work to correspond with Left Leg having increases and decreases on opposite sides.
SUSPENDERS (Make 2) … With No. 3 needles cast on 12 sts. 1st row: Slip 1, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat the 1st row until piece measures 13 inches. Next row: Work across 5 sts, bind off the next 2 sts for buttonhole, and finish row. On following row cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off. Work ½ inch more. Bind off. Block suspenders to measure 18 inches.
FINISHING … Sew front and back crotch seams. Sew leg seams. Press lightly through damp cloth. Sew 2 buttons for suspenders on front. Button suspenders to leggings, then sew down back of suspenders, adjusting to proper length.
JACKET
Starting at neck edge with No. 5 needles, cast on 35 sts loosely. 1st row: P 2, insert a marker on needle, p 5, insert a 2nd marker, p 21, insert 3rd marker, p 5, insert 4th marker, p 2. The 4 markers indicate raglan seams and are slipped from left to right hand needle on each row. Increases are made in the st before and the st after each marker on every even row. 2nd row: K 1, inc 1 st in each of the next 2 sts, k 1, p 1, k 1, inc in next 2 sts, k 1, (p 1, k 3) 4 times; p 1, k 1, inc in next 2 sts, k 1, p 1, k 1, inc in next 2 sts, k 1 (43 sts). 3rd row: P 5, k 3, p 4, (k 3, p 1) 4 times; k 3, p 4, k 3, p 5. Note that all increased sts will always be purled on the following row. 4th row: Inc 1 st in 1st st, k 1, inc in next 2 sts, k 2, p 1, k 2, inc in next 2 sts, k 2, (p 1, k 3) 4 times; p 1, k 2, inc in next 2 sts, k 2, p 1, k 2, inc in next 2 sts, k 1, inc in last st (53 sts). 5th row: K 2, p 6, k 3, p 6, (k 3, p 1) 4 times; (k 3, p 6) twice; k 2. 6th row: Inc in 1st st, k 3, inc 2, k 3, p 1, k 3, inc 2, (k 3, p 1) 5 times; k 3, inc 2, k 3, p 1, k 3, inc 2, k 3, inc in last st (63 sts). 7th row: K 3, p 1, k 1, p 4, k 1, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 1, p 4, k 1, p 1, (k 3, p 1) 5 times; k 1, p 4, k 1, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 1, p 4, k 1, p 1, k 3. Cast on 8 sts for front of neck (71 sts). 8th row: K 5, * (p 1, k 3) twice; p 1, inc 2. Repeat from * once more, (p 1, k 3) 6 times; p 1, inc 2, (p 1, k 3) twice; p 1, inc 2, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 1. Cast on 8 sts for other front (87 sts). There will not be any more increases at neck edge, and all odd rows will now start and end with k 3. 9th row: (K 3, p 1) 3 times: k 2, p 4, k 2, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 2, p 4, k 2, (p 1, k 3) 5 times; p 1, k 2, p 4, k 2, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 2, p 4, k 2, (p 1, k 3) 3 times. Notice that sts immediately after each marker are always exactly the reverse of the sts before the marker.
10th row: K 5, * (p 1, k 3) twice; p 1, k 1, inc 2, k 1. Repeat from * once more, (p 1, k 3) 6 times; ** p 1, k 1, inc 2, k 1, (p 1, k 3) twice. Repeat from ** once more, p 1, k 5 (95 sts). All even rows will start and end with k 5. 11th row: (K 3, p 1) 3 times; k 3, p 4, (k 3, p 1) twice; k 3, p 4 (k 3, p 1) 6 times; k 3, p 4, (k 3, p 1) twice; k 3, p 4, (k 3, p 1) 3 times; k 3. 12th row: K 5, * (p 1, k 3) twice; p 1, k 2, inc 2, k 2. Repeat from * once more, (p 1, k 3) 6 times; ** p 1, k 2, inc 2, k 2, (p 1, k 3) twice. Repeat from ** once more, p 1, k 5 (103 sts). Continue in this manner, working pattern as established and increasing 8 sts every 2nd row (before and after seam sts), with 3 sts in garter stitch at each end for zipper border, until there are 263 sts on needle. Work 1 row after last increase row. Next row: Work in pattern across 38 sts and take them off on stitch holder for Left Front. Work across next 57 sts for Left Sleeve, then take remaining sts off on other stitch holders to be worked later. Cast on 2 sts at each end of sleeve and work straight in pattern for 2 inches. Dec 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until 51 sts remain. Work straight until sleeve measures 9 inches from cast-on stitches. Dec evenly across next row to 36 sts. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 3 inches. Pick up sts of other sleeve and work in same manner. Pick up the sts being held for Left Front, attach yarn, cast on 3 sts for underarm, work in pattern across sts of Back, cast on 3 sts for other underarm and work across sts of Right Front (155 sts). Continue working straight in pattern until piece measures 10½ inches from front of neck. Change to No. 3 needles and dec evenly across row to 130 sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2¼ inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
COLLAR … With No. 3 needles, and right side facing, pick up 38 sts across the 35 cast-on sts of neck edge. Work back and forth in ribbing of k 2, p 2, picking up 2 sts at the end of each row until there are 66 sts in all. Collar should now reach front edges. Now bind off 2 sts at the beginning of each row until 38 sts remain. Bind off loosely in ribbing. Fold collar in half toward inside and sew bound-off edge to neck edge. Sew sleeve seams and small opening at underarm. Sew in zipper.
HELMET
Starting at one end with No. 5 needles cast on 48 sts. Work in Pattern Stitch until piece measures 18 inches. Bind off. Fold in half and sew back seam.
NECK RIBBING … With No. 3 needles, cast on 10 sts. Pick up 76 sts around bottom of Helmet and cast on 10 sts at other end. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for ¾ inch, then make a buttonhole 4 sts in from Right Front edge. To make a buttonhole bind off 2 sts, and on following row cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off. Continue in ribbing until neckband measures 1½ inches in all. Bind off loosely in ribbing. Thread a double strand of yarn into a sewing needle and work a tight running stitch around front edge to prevent stretching. Sew on button.
