Sizes 1 to 2 Yr. and 2 to 3 Yr.

MATERIALS:
4 1-oz. Skeins 3-ply Fingering Yarn
1 Pr. Size 2 Standard Knitting Needles
1 Pr. Size 4 Standard Knitting Needles

GAUGE: 7 sts to 1 in.

BACK: With size 4 needles cast on 73 sts (2 to 3 yr. 81 sts). Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 1½ in. Work even in stockinette st until piece measures 6 in. (2 to 3 yr. 7 in.) or desired length to underarm. Bind off 4 sts at beg. of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Dec. 1 st at each end every other row 4 times.
Work even until piece measures 3½ in. (2 to 3 yr. 4 in.) from bound off sts at underarm. Bind off 7 sts (2 to 3 yr. 8 sts) at beg. of each of next 6 rows for shoulders. Bind off remaining sts.

RIGHT FRONT: With size 4 needles cast on 41 sts (2 to 3 yr. 45 sts). Work as follows:
Row 1—P 2, K 5, P 2; K 1, P 1, across row.
Row 2—K 1, P 1, over 32 sts (2 to 3 yr. 36 sts); K 2, P 5, K 2.
Repeat above 2 rows working a buttonhole on the 7th and every 14th row (2 to 3 yr. every 16th row) thereafter working last buttonhole on the 2nd row of neckband as follows: starting at front edge, P 2, K 2, Y O, K 2 tog., K 1, P 2, work across row. Work back purling the Y O as a stitch (if you are making this cardigan for a boy, work the buttonholes on the left front).
When ribbing measures same as back, continuing buttonholes, work in stockinette st instead of rib­bing, until piece measures same as back to under­arm.
Keeping front edge even, bind off 6 sts at underarm edge once; dec. 1 st at underarm edge every other row 3 times. Work even until piece measures 2½ in. (2 to 3 yr. 3 in.) from bound off sts at under­arm. Keeping armhole edge even, bind off 7 sts (2 to 3 yr. 8 sts) at neck edge once. Dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 times.
Work even until piece measures same as back from bound off sts at underarm to shoulder. Starting at shoulder edge, bind off 7 sts (2 to 3 yr. 8 sts) every other row 3 times.

LEFT FRONT: Work as given for right front, binding off for underarm on right side (omitting buttonholes if made for a girl). Sew shoulder seams.

SLEEVES: With size 4 needles on right side of garment, pick up 58 sts (2 and 3 yr. 62 sts). Work even in stockinette st for 2½ in. Dec. 1 st at each end every 8th row 6 times. Work even until sleeve measures 7 in. (2 to 3 yr. 8 in.) or desired length to cuff. Change to size 2 needles and P 1 row (wrong side) decreasing to 35 sts (2 to 3 yr. 39 sts). Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2 in. Bind off loosely.
Sew underarm and sleeve seams.

NECKBAND: With size 2 needles on right side of garment, pick up 77 sts (2 to 3 yr. 79 sts) across neck edge. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 5 rows (2 to 3 yr. 6 rows). Bind off.
