REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 8-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #2 single pointed; 1-pr. #5 single pointed.

GAUGE: 5½ sts to an inch. 7 rows to an inch.

Explanation of Seed stitch: P 1, k 1, p 1. Next row, you purl above the knit st, and knit above the purl st.

BACK: Using the #2 needles cast on 73 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Change to the #5 needles and work as follows: Row 1: * p 1, k 1, p 1, k 11, repeat from * across row, ending with p 1, k 1, p 1. Row 2: * p 1, k 1, p 1, p 11, repeat from * across row, ending with p 1, k 1, p 1. Repeat these last 2 rows 14 times more, (16 rows in all). Rows 17-18-19-20-21-22: * P 1, k 1, repeat from * across row, ending with p 1. (Note: These 22 rows form the block pattern). Work until the piece measures 9 inches or as long as you need up to the under­arm. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side). Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 3 times. Work even until the arm­hole measures 5 inches above the underarm bind off. SHOULDERS: Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows. Bind off the remaining sts for the back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Using the #2 needles cast on 39 sts and work as follows: 1st row: P 1, k 1, over 11 sts, (front border); * k 1, p 1, repeat from * to end of row, ending with p 1. 2nd row: K 1, p 1, over 28 sts; p 1, k 1, over the last 11 sts for the seed st border. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches, ending with 1st row. Change to the #5 needles and work as follows: Row 1: P 1, k 1, p 1, k 11, p 1, k 1, p 1, k 11, seed stitch on the last 11 sts, (border). Row 2: Seed stitch the first 11 sts; p 11 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1, p 11 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1. Work pattern as on the back until the front measures the same as the back up to the underarm. UNDERARM SHAPING: At the underarm edge bind off 3 sts once, keeping the front edge. Decrease 1 stitch at the under­arm edge every other row 3 times. Then work even until the armhole measures 3¾ inches above the underarm. NECK SHAPING: At the neck edge bind off 11 sts once; bind off 2 sts at the neck edge 2 times. Then when the armhole measures the same as the back, from the armhole edge bind off 6 sts 3 times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to the left front. Making the first buttonhole an inch from the beginning as follows: Work 4 sts, bind off the next 3 sts; finish the row. Next row: Work back to where you bound off the sts, cast on 3 sts, finish the row. Repeat the buttonhole in the horizontal seed stitch line.

SLEEVES: Using the #2 needles cast on 45 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Change to the #5 needles and work in the same pattern as on the back to start with. INCREASE 1 STITCH at each side of the work every 6th row, 8 times, (61 sts). Work even until the sleeve measures 11 inches, or as long as you need up to the underarm. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 8 times. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every row 4 times. Bind off all sts. Make the 2nd sleeve the same way. FINISHING: Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armhole matching the underarm seams and easing in any fullness towards the top. Neck Band: With the right side of the work facing you, pick up and knit 78 sts around the neck edge. Keeping the first and last 11 sts in the seed pattern and the remainder in ribbing of k 1, p 1, work for ¾ inches. Bind off loosely.
