REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 4-ounces of 3-ply Fingering

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #1 single pointed; 1-pr. #3 single pointed

GAUGE: 8 sts to an inch. 10 rows to an inch.

BACK: Using the #1 needles cast on 82 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 inches. Change to the #3 needles and work as follows: Row 1: K 40 sts, p 2, k 40 sts. Row 2: P 40 sts, k 2, p 40 sts. Row 3: K 38 sts, p 2, k 2, p 2, k 38 sts. Row 4: P 38 sts, k 2, p 2, k 2, p 38 sts. Row 5: K 36 sts, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 36 sts. Row 6: P 36 sts, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 36 sts. Row 7: K 34 sts, p 2, k 10, p 2, k 34 sts. Row 8: P 34 sts, k 2, p 10, k 2, p 34 sts. Row 9: K 32 sts, p 2, k 14, p 2, k 32 sts. Row 10: P 32 sts, k 2, p 14, k 2, p 32. Continue in the above manner shifting 2 sts on each side until the purl sts reach the sides. Then continue in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7 ½ inches in all, or as long as you want up to the underarm. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 3 times. Then work even until the armhole measures 4 ¾ inches above the underarm. SHOULDERS: Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows, (21 sts for each shoulder). Bind off loosely the remaining sts for the back of the neck.

FRONT: Work exactly as the back until you come to the underarm bind off. Mark the center 2 sts. Purl these 2 sts and create another set of patterns, working each pattern for 4 rows instead of 2 rows as before. Do the bind off and decreases while doing this. Then working in the pattern until the armhole measures 2 ½ inches above the underarm bind off. NECK SHAPING: Work over one half of the sts, (36), place the remaining 36 sts onto a stitch holder. Carrying out the purl sts to the side; decrease 1 stitch at the neck edge every row until 21 sts remain on the needle. Then when the armhole measures 4 ¾ inches above the underarm bind off; shape the SHOULDERS: From the armhole edge bind off 7 sts 3 times. Place the 36 sts from st holder back onto a needle, tie yarn in and work to correspond.

LONG SLEEVES: Using the #1 needles cast on 46 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 inches. Now change to the #3 needles and on the next row knit and increase to 58 sts. Purl back. Work in stockinette stitch for an inch, ending with a purl row. Next row: K 28 sts, p 2, k 28 sts. Next row: P 28 sts, k 2, p 28 sts. Work out towards the sides as on the sweater until the purl sts are at the sides. Now start another pattern out from the center. (Keep doing this until sleeve is completed). Work until the sleeve measures 8 inches or as long as you want up to the underarm. UNDERARM BIND OFF: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 8 times. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every row 6 times. Bind off all sts. Make the 2nd sleeve the same way.

NECK BANDS: Using the #1 needles pick up and knit the sts on back of neck, with the right side of the work facing you. Knit 1 row, purl 1 row for a ½ inch. Bind off loosely. Do the same around the front of the neck.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder, side seams, sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into the armhole matching the underarm seams.

Embroidery: With a contrasting color, make a cross stitch above every other block on the sweater.
