REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 4-ounces of 3-ply Sport Yarn

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #1 single pointed; 1-pr. #3 single pointed

GAUGE: 7 sts to an inch. 9 rows to an inch.

CARDIGAN BACK: Using the #1 needles, cast on 74 (80) sts; work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 ½ (2) inches. Now change to the #3 needles and work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7 ½ (8 ½) inches. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 2 (3) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side), Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every knit row 2 (3) times. Now work even until the armhole measures 4 (4 ½) inches above the underarm. SHOULDER SHAPING: Bind off 8 (9) sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows, 16 (18) sts for each shoulder. Place the remaining sts onto a stitch holder.

FRONT: Using the #1 needles cast on 40 (44) sts; work as follows: Row 1: K 2, p 4, k 2, (border); * p 1, k 1, repeat from * across row. Row 2: Work ribbing across row until 8 sts are left; knit the last 8 sts. Repeat these 2 rows until the band measures 1 ½ (2) inches in all, ending with row 1. Change to the #3 needles and knit across next row. Next row: K 2, p 4, k 2; purl to the remainder of the row. Repeat these last 2 rows until the piece measures the same as the back up to the underarm. Still keep the front border all the way up to the neck edge, start the UNDERARM SHAPING: At the underarm edge bind off 2 (3) sts once; decrease 1 stitch at the underarm edge every knit row 2 (2) times. Now work even until the armhole measures 3 inches. NECK SHAPING: At the neck edge bind off 16 (18) sts once; decrease 1 stitch at the neck edge every other row 4 (3) times. When the armhole measures the same as the back; from the armhole edge bind off 8 (9) sts twice. Break yarn.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to the left front. Make first buttonhole when work measures a half inch. From the front edge work 3 sts; bind off 2 sts; finish the row. On the next row, cast on 2 sts over those bound off. Make a buttonhole every 1 ½ inches.

LONG SLEEVES: Using the #1 needles, cast on 48 sts. (both sizes). Work in ribbing for 1 ½ (2) inches. Now change to the #3 needles and on the next row knit, increasing 8 (12) sts evenly spaced apart. Now work in stockinette stitch until the sleeve measures 7 (8) inches in all. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 4 (5) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every knit row until 28 (30) sts remain on the needle. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every row 3 (4) times. Bind off all sts. Make the other sleeve the same way.

FINISHING: Sew the shoulders, side seams, sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into the armhole, matching the underarm seams.

NECK BAND: Using the #1 needles, with the right side of the work facing you, pick up and knit 76 (82) sts around the neck. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for ¾ inch. Bind off loosely.
