Cardigan Sweater

These directions are for Size 12. Changes for Sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Knitting Worsted (4 oz skein) Main Color (MC)-3(4-4-5) skeins; Contrasting Color (CC)-1(1-2-2) skeins
OR
Columbia-Minerva Calypso Germantown Knitting Worsted (2 or 4 oz skein) Main Color (MC)-14(16-18-22) ozs; Contrasting Color (CC)-4(6-6-8) ozs
Knitting Needles: 1 pair each "Boye" Sizes 5 and 9 -14 inch
Gauge: 9 ½ sts to 2 inches; 13 rows to 2 inches (Size 9 needles)

BACK: With CC and Size 5 needles cast on 79(85-89-95) sts. Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1: (Right side of work) K 1, *P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. Row 2: P 1, *K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches. Join MC, change to Size 9 needles and work in pat as follows: Always carry unused yarn loosely across back of work on pat rows. Rows 1 through 6: With MC work in St St. Row 7: (Right side of work) With MC - K 3(6-8-11), *with CC - K 1, with MC - K 11, repeat from * across, ending CC - K 1, then with MC - K 3(6-8-11). Row 8: With MC - P 2(5-7-10), *CC - P 3, MC - P 9, repeat from * across, ending CC - P 3, then with MC - P 2 (5-7-10). Row 9: Same as Row 7. Row 10: With MC - P. Row 11: With MC - K. Rows 12 through 15: Repeat Rows 4 and 5 two times. Row 16: With MC - P 9(0-2-5), *CC - P 1, MC - P 11, repeat from * across, ending CC - P 1, then with MC - P 9(0-2-5). Row 17: With MC - K 8(0-1-4), CC - K 3(2-3-3), *MC - K 9, CC - K 3, repeat from * across, ending MC - K 8(MC - K 9, CC - K 2, MC - K 1, MC - K 4). Row 18: Same as Row 16. Repeat these 18 rows for pat. When work measures 14 inches, or desired length from start to underarm, To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 5 times - 61(67-71-77) sts on needle. When armholes measure 7 ½” (8”-8”-8 ½”), measured straight from bound-off sts at underarm, shape Neck and Shoulder at the same time as follows: Bind off 6(6-7-7) sts at armhole edge, work next 14(16-16-18) sts, sl rem 41 (45-48-52) sts onto st holder. Working Right Side only, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 2 times and bind off 6(7-7-8) sts at armhole edge every other row 2 times. Leaving center 21(23-25-27) sts on st holder, work other side to correspond, reversing shaping.

LEFT FRONT: With CC and Size 5 needles cast on 31(34-36-39) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, same as on Back, ending on wrong side of work and leaving sts on needle. With MC and Size 9 needles cast on 11 sts and work pat as follows: Row 1: (Right side of work) MC - K. Row 2: MC - P 2, CC - P 1, MC - P 8. Row 3: MC - K 7, CC - K 3, MC - K 1. Row 4: Same as Row 2. With MC work 6 rows in St St. Row 11: MC - K 2, CC - K 1, MC - K 8. Row 12: MC - P 7, CC - P 3, MC – P1. Row 13: Same as Row 11. Row 14: MC - P across the 11 sts, then P across the 31(34-36-39) sts of ribbing - 42(45-47-50) sts on needle. With MC work 5 more rows in St St. Row 20: MC - P 2, *CC - P 1, MC - P 11, repeat from * across, ending CC - P 1, then with MC - P 3(6-8-11). Row 21: MC - K 2(5-7-10), *CC - K 3, MC - K 9, repeat from * across, ending CC - K 3, MC - K 1. Row 22: Same as Row 20. With MC work 6 rows in St St. Row 29: MC - K 9(0-2-5), *CC - K 1, MC - K 11, repeat from * across, ending CC - K 1, MC - K 8. Row 30: MC - P 7, *CC - P 3, MC - P 9, repeat from * across, ending CC - P 3(2-3-3), then with MC - P 8(0-1-4). Row 31: Same as Row 29. Rows 32 through 37: With MC work 6 rows in St St. Repeat pat from Row 20. When work measures same as Back to underarm, To Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 5 times - 33(36-38-41) sts on needle. When front edge measures 17”(17 ½”-17 ½”-18”) from start, To Shape Neck: Bind off 9(9-10-11) sts at front edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every 4th row 6(7-7-7) times. When armhole measures same as at Back, To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 6(6-7-7) sts at armhole edge every other row 3(1-3-1) times, then bind off 0(7-0-8) sts every other row 0(2-0-2) times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with Left Front, reversing pat and shaping.

SLEEVES: With CC and Size 5 needles cast on 41(43-45-47) sts. Work in ribbing same as on Back, inc'ing 16 sts evenly across last row - 57(59-61-63) sts on needle. Join MC, change to Size 9 needles and work in pat as follows: With MC work 6 rows in St St. Row 7: (Right side of work) MC - K 10(11-12-1), *CC K 1, MC - K 11, repeat from * across, ending CC - K 1, then with MC - K 10(11-12-1). Row 8: MC - P 9(10-11-0), *CC - P 3, MC - P 9, repeat from * across, ending CC - P 3, then with MC - P 9(10-11-0). Row 9: Same as Row 7. Rows 10 through 15: With MC work in St St. Row 16: MC - P 4(5-6-7), *CC - P 1, MC - P 11, repeat from * across, ending CC - P 1, then with MC - P 4(5-6-7). Row 17: MC - K 4(5-6-7), *CC - K 3, MC - K 9, repeat from * across, ending CC - K 3, then with MC - K 4(5-6-7). Row 18: Same as Row 16. Repeat these 18 rows for pat.

When work measures 17”(17”-17 ½”-17 ½”), or desired length from start to underarm, To Shape Cap of Sleeve: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row until 17(17-19-19) sts rem. Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off rem 9(9-11-11) sts.

Sew shoulder seams.

NECKBAND: With right side facing, starting at inside corner of lower right neck edge, with MC and Size 5 needles pick up and K 77(79-81-83) sts around neck edge, including sts on st holder. Break MC and join CC. P 1 row, then work in ribbing of P 1, K 1, until Neckband is long enough to fit bound-off edge of neck edge. Bind off in ribbing,

Sew Sleeves in place. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew side edges of Neckband to bound-off sts at neck edge. Overcast lower ribbing to front section as illustrated. With CC work 1 row of sc at front edges and sew separating slide fastener in front opening.
