Cardigan Sweater

These directions are for Size 12. Changes for Sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Calibar (2 oz skein) - 12(13-14-14) skeins
OR
Columbia-Minerva Nylon and Wool Calibrette (2 oz skein) - 10(11-12-12) skeins
Knitting Needles: 1 pair each "Boye" Sizes 5 and 10 ½ - 14 inch and 1 "Boye" cable needle
Gauge: 3 ½ sts to 1 inch (Size 10 ½ needles)
1 "Boye" Steel Crochet Hook Size 0

BACK: With Size 5 needles cast on 59(63-67-71) sts, Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1: (Right side of work) P1, *K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row. Row 2: K 1, *P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 ½ inches. Change to Size 10 ½ needles and continue to repeat Rows 1 and 2 for pat, working even until work measures 12 ½”(13”-13”-13 ½”) from start, or desired length to underarm. To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 3 times - 45(49-53-57) sts on needle. When armholes measure 8”(8”-8 ½”-8 ½”) measured straight, To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 7(8-8-9) sts at beg of next 4(4-2-2) rows, then bind off 0(0-9-10) sts at beg of next 0(0-2-2) rows. Bind off rem sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: With Size 5 needles cast on 33 (3537-39) sts. Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1: (Right side of work) "P 1, K 1, repeat from * across to within last 7 sts, P 1, K 6 (front border). Row 2: P 6, K 1, *P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 ½ inches, ending with Row 1. Next row P 6, K 1, P 2, inc 1 st in next st by P in front and back of st, P 2, then K 1, P 1, in ribbing for 9(11-13-15) sts, P 2, inc 1 st in next st, P 2, then K 1, P 1, in ribbing for 7 sts. Change to Size 10 ½ needles and start cable pat as follows: Row 1: P 1, K 1, in ribbing for 7 sts, sl next 3 sts onto cable needle and hold in back of work, K next 3 sts, then K the 3 sts from cable needle (cable twist), P 1, K 1, in ribbing for 9(11-13-15) sts, twist cable on next 6 sts as before, P 1, K 6. Rows 2, 4 and 6: P 6, K 1, P 6, then K 1, P 1, in ribbing for 9(11-13-15) sts, P 6, then K 1, P 1, in ribbing for 7 sts. Rows 3 and 5: P 1, K 1, in ribbing for 7 sts, K 6, then P 1, K 1, in ribbing for 9(11-13-15) sts, K 6, P 1, K 6. Repeat these 6 rows 3 times more, then repeat Row 1 (5 cable twists). Next row P 6, K 1, P 1, K 1, P 2 tog, then K 1, P 1, in ribbing for 13(15-17-19) sts, P 2 tog, then K 1, P 1, in ribbing for 9 sts - 33 (35-37-39) sts on needle. Continuing 6 sts at front edge in St St for border, work rem sts in ribbing. When work measures same as Back to underarm, To Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times - 26 (28-30-32) sts on needle. Work even until front edge measures 18 ½”(19”-19 ½”-20”) from start. To Shape Neck: Bind off 9(9-10-10) sts at front edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times - 14(16-17-19) sts on needle. When armhole measures same as at Back, To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 7(8-8-9) sts at armhole edge every other row 2(2-1-1) times, then bind off 0(0-9-10) sts at same edge 0(0-1-1) time. Place markers for 6 buttons on front border, having first marker 1 inch from start and 6th marker 1 inch below neck edge.

RIGHT FRONT: With Size 5 needles cast on 33(35-37-39) sts, Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1: (Right side of work) K 6, P 1, *K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row. Row 2: K 1, *P 1, K 1, repeat from * across to within last 6 sts, P 6. Repeat these 2 rows for pat, working buttonholes to correspond with markers (on right side of work) by K 2, bind off 2 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts AND AT THE SAME TIME when work measures 2 ½ inches from start, change to Size 10 ½ needles and continue to repeat Rows 1 and 2 until work measures same as Back to underarm, ending with Row 1. To Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at side edge, K 1, P 1, K 1, P 2, inc 1 st in next st by P in front and back of st, P 2, work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 9(11-13-15) sts, P 2, inc 1 st in next st as before, P 2, K 1, P 6. Next row twist cables as on Left Front, then every 6th row 4 times more AND AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row 3 times. Work even until front edge measures same as Left Front. To Shape Neck: Bind off 9(9-10-10) sts at front edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times AND AT THE SAME TIME after 5th cable twist, dec 1 st in each K 6 of cable as before. When armhole measures same as at Back, shape shoulder same as for Left Front.

SLEEVES: With Size 5 needles cast on 41(43-45-47) sts. Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1: K 1, *P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. Row 2: P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows for pat. When work measures 2 ½ inches from start, change to Size 10 ½ needles and work even until Sleeve measures 12 ½”(13”-13”-13 ½”), or desired length from start. To Shape Cap of Sleeve: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 10 times, then dec 1 st each side every row until 7(9-11-13) sts rem. Bind off.

COLLAR: With Size 10 ½ needles cast on 79(79-83-83) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 3 inches. Change to Size 5 needles and continue in ribbing until work measures 4 inches from start. Bind off in ribbing.

Sew shoulder seams. Sew Sleeves in place. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew bound-off edge of Collar to neck edge, ½ inch in from front edges. Work 1 row of sc at front edges, then face front edges with grosgrain ribbon, working around buttonholes.
