MATERIALS: Beehive Moorland Sock and Sweater Yarn, Patonised Shrink-resist Finish, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins) of Scarlet: Size 12 — 36 skeins: Sizes 14 and 16 — 38 skeins ... Royal Society Aluminum or Plastic Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size) ... 8 buttons ... Shoulder pads.

GAUGE: 6½ sts measure 1 inch; 9 rows measure 1 inch.

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with No. 5 knitting needles, cast on 184 (188, 190) sts. Work in stockinette st, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, for 7 rows. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Attach another ball of yarn and change to No. 4 knitting needles and, with 2 strands of yarn, work as follows: 1st row: K 76 (78, 79), sl 1, k 7, p 1, k 14, p 1, k 7, sl 1, k 76 (78, 79). 2nd row: Purl across. Repeat the last 2 rows until piece measures 10 (10½, 11) inches from hemline. Decrease 1 st at both ends of next row. Work without decreasing for 3 inches, then decrease 1 st at both ends of next row. Work without decreasing until piece measures 16 (16½, 17) inches from hemline.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of following 10 rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every other row 4 times, then decrease 1 st at both ends of every 4th row twice. There are on needle 110 (144, 146) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures 5 inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending with a purl row.

Next row: K 2 tog, k 52 (54, 55), sl 1, k 7, bind off 16 sts for box pleat — 1 st remains on right hand needle — k 6, sl 1, k 52 (54, 55), k 2 tog. Turn and work over the last set of 61 (63, 64) sts only as follows: 1st row: Purl across. 2nd row: K 53 (55, 56), sl 1, k 7. Repeat the last 2 rows until piece measures 9½ (9½, 10) inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 6 (8, 9) sts at the beginning of next row. Bind off 5 sts at armhole edge every other row 3 times, ending at center back edge. Bind off 23 sts for neck at beginning of next row. Then bind off 5 sts at armhole edge every other row 3 times

At the Same Time

decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row twice. Break off.

Attach yarn to opposite side of bound-off sts where sts we divided, and work other side to correspond, reversing shapings.

LEFT FRONT ... With single strand of yarn and No. 5  knitting needles, cast on 86 (90, 92) sts. Work in stockinette st for 7 rows. Cast on 24 sts at beginning of next row for facing and knit across (hemline). Attach another ball of yarn, change to No. 4 knitting needles and work in stockinette st until piece measures 10 (10½, 11) inches from hemline, ending at side edge, then decrease 1 st at the beginning of next row. Work without decreasing for 3 inches, ending at side edge. Decrease 1 st at the beginning of next row. Work without decreasing until piece measures 16 (16½, 17) inches from hemline, ending at side edge.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of next row. Bind off 2 sts at armhole edge every other row 5 times, then decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row 3 times. There are on needle 91 (95, 97) sts.

To Shape Dart: With right side facing, k 27 (31, 33) sts, increase 1 st in next st. Turn and work over the last set of sts only, decreasing 1 st at dart edge every 7th row 9 times. Work without decreasing until piece measures 9½ (9½, 10) 1 inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole at edge.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of next row. Bind off 5 sts at armhole edge every other row twice. Bind off remaining 3 (7, 9) sts.

Attach yarn where sts were divided, increase 1 st at dart edge on next row and every 11th row 5 times in all

increase 1 st at opposite end every 15th row 4 times. Work until piece measures 8 inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge.

To Shape Neck: Work across 16 sts, place these sts on a safety pin to be worked later. Bind off next 22 sts, work across remaining sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row 15 times. Work without decreasing until piece measures 10 (10, 10½) inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of next row, then bind off 5 sts at armhole edge every other row 3 times. Slip the 16 sts from safety pin on to a knitting needle, attach yarn and work in stockinette st over these 16 sts, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row 16 times.

RIGHT FRONT ... Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings and making a set of buttonholes when piece measures 10 (10½, 11) inches from hemline and every 4½ inches there­after until 4 sets of buttonholes in all are made — to make a set of buttonholes 15 sts in from front edge, bind off 4 sts, work 10 sts, bind off 4 sts, complete row; on next row cast on 4 sts over each set of 4 sts bound off. When increases are made at front edge, be careful to make buttonholes in line with previous buttonholes.

SLEEVES ... Starting at cuff with double yarn and No. 4 knitting needles, cast on 98 sts. Work in stockinette st for 25 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until there are 106 sts on needle. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Decrease 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until 98 sts remain. Work without decreasing until piece measures 3½, inches from hemline, ending with a purl row. Next row: Purl across — stockinette st is now reversed. Work until piece measures 16½ (16½, 17) inches from hemline.

To Shape Top: Bind off 8 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next 6 rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every other row 3 times; decrease 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row 13 times; decrease 1 st at both ends of every other row twice; decrease 1 st at both ends of each row 4 (4, —) times: decrease 1 st at both ends of every other row — (—, 4) times. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next 6 rows. Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR ... With double yarn and No. 4 knitting needles, cast on 40 sts. Knit 1 row. Cast on 10 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows. Cast on 14 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. There are 108 sts on needle. Now increase 1 st at both ends of every other row until there are 134 sts on needle. Work without increasing until piece measures 4½ inches, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every other row until 108 sts remain. Work without decreasing until piece measures 4½ inches from hemline. Bind off.

POCKET (Make 2) ... With single strand of yarn and No. 5 knitting needles, cast on 50 sts. Work in stockinette st for ½ inch, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Attach another ball of yarn, change to No. 4 knitting needles and. with double yarn, work in stockinette st until piece measures 6¼ inches from hemline, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across. Break off 1 ball of yarn, change to No. 5 knitting needles and work for 1 inch. Bind off.

Block to measurements given. Make a box pleat with the bound-off sts at Back and sew in place. Place the slip st row of each center back together and sew neatly in place to 1 inch below top of pleat. Press pleat. Sew darts of fronts. Sew hem in place at lower edge. Turn facings on wrong side, matching buttonholes. Sew buttonholes together neatly. Sew side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Turn cuff at hem and sew in place. Turn cuff back to right side. Fold collar at hemline and turn the 4 sts at front edges to back of collar and sew in place. Sew on collar 2 inches in from each side of neck edge. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Hem pockets and sew in place. Sew in shoulder pads. Press all seams.
