MATERIALS: Beehive Scotch Fingering Yarn, Patonised Shrink-resist Finish, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins): Size 12 — 8 skeins of Melton Green and 4 skeins each of White and Woodland Green; Sizes 14 and 16 — 9 skeins of Melton Green and 5 skeins each of White and Woodland Green ... Royal Society Aluminum or Plastic Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size) ... 7-inch Crown Zipper (skirt placket) ... 5 large buttons and 6 small buttons ... 2 yards of grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.

GAUGE: Stockinette st: 8 sts measure 1 inch; 10 rows measure 1 inch. Garter st: 8 sts measure 1 inch; 14 rows measure 1 inch.

JACKET

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with Melton Green, cast on 144 (152, 160) sts. Work in stockinette st, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, for ¾ inch, ending with a purl row. Next row: Purl across (hemline).

Now work in garter st (knit each row) in stripe pattern as follows: 1st and 2nd rows: With Melton Green, knit across. Drop Melton Green (2nd row is right side of work). Attach a ball of Woodland Green. 3rd and 4th rows: Knit across. Drop Woodland Green. Attach a ball of White. 5th and 6th rows: Knit across. Drop White. 7th and 8th rows: Pick up Woodland Green and knit across. Drop Woodland Green. 9th and 10th rows: Pick up Melton Green and knit across. Drop Melton Green. 11th and 12th rows: Pick up Woodland Green and knit across. Drop Woodland Green. 13th and 14th rows: Pick up White and knit across. Drop White. The last 8 rows (7th to 14th rows incl) constitute the stripe pattern. Work in stripe pattern until piece measures 1½ inches from hemline.

1st decrease row: K 27 (31, 35), * k 2 tog, k 27. Repeat from * 2 more times, k 2 tog, k 28 (32, 36). Work without decreasing until piece measures 3 inches from hemline. 2nd decrease row: K 27 (31, 35), * k 2 tog, k 26. Repeat from * 2 more times, k 2 tog, k 27 (31, 35). Now work in pattern until piece measures 4 inches from hemline. 3rd decrease row: K 26 (30, 34), * k 2 tog, k 25. Repeat from * 2 more times, k 2 tog, k 27 (31, 35). Continuing in pattern, make a decrease row as before every inch as follows: 4th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 24 (28, 32), * k 2 tog, k 24. Repeat from * 2 more times, k 2 tog, k 24 (28, 32), k 2 tog. 5th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 22 (26, 30), * k 2 tog, k 23. Repeat from * 2 more times, k 2 tog, k 23 (27, 31), k 2 tog. 6th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 21 (25, 29), * k 2 tog, k 22. Work without increasing until piece measures 15¾ (16¼, 16¾) inches from hemline.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off at the beginning of next 2 rows, 5 (6, 7) sts. Decrease 1 st at both ends of each row 7 (8, 9) times. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every 4th row, until there remain 108 (112, 116) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 8 (8¼, 8½) inches.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 9 sts at the beginning of next 8 (6, 6) rows. Bind off at the beginning of next 2 rows — (10, 11) sts. Bind off remaining 36 (38, 40) sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT ... Starting at lower edge with Melton Green, cast on 82 (86, 90) sts. Work in stockinette st for ¾ inch, ending with a purl row. Next row: Purl across (hemline). Cast on 22 (24, 26) sts (front facing). There are on needle 104 (110, 116) sts.

Now work in stripe pattern for 1½ inches. 1st decrease row: With right side facing k 28, k 2 tog, k 27, k 2 tog, k 45 (51, 57). Work without decreasing for 1½ inches. 2nd de­crease row: With right side facing, k 27, k 2 tog, k 26, k 2 tog, k 45 (51, 57). Now decrease on one row every inch, always decreasing with right side facing as follows: 3rd decrease row: K 26, k 2 tog, k 25, k 2 tog, k 45 (51, 57). 4th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 23, k 2 tog, k 24, k 2 tog, k 45 (51, 57) sts. 5th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 22, k 2 tog, k 23, k 2 tog, k 44 (50, 56). 6th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 21, k 2 tog, k 22, k 2 tog, k 43 (49, 55). 7th decrease row: K 2 tog, k 20, k 2 tog, k 21, k 2 tog, k 42 (48, 54). After 7th decrease row, work without decreas­ing for ½ inch.

Increase 1 st at side edge on next row and every 8th row thereafter 14 times

At the Same Time

when piece measures 14 inches from hemline increase 1 st at front edge on next row and every 10th (9th, 8th) row thereafter 14 (15, 16) times. Work without increasing at side edge until piece measures 15¾ (16¼,16¾) inches from hemline, ending at side edge, ending with same color as on back.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off at the beginning of next row 5 (6, 7) sts. Decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row 13 (14, 15) times. Continuing with front increases, work without decreasing at opposite edge until piece measures 8 (8¼, 8½) inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at side edge.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 9 sts at the beginning of next row and every other row 4 (3, 3) times. Bind off at shoulder edge — (10, 11) sts once. There remain on needle 60 (64, 68) sts (collar sts). Work without shaping for 2½ (2½, 2¾) inches.

To Shape Collar: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of each row until 8 sts remain. Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT ... Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings and making a set of buttonholes 12 sts in from front edge when piece measures 8 inches from hemline and every 2¼ inches thereafter until 5 sets of buttonholes in all are made — to make a set of buttonholes, on one row, bind off 3 sts, k 10, bind off 3 sts; on next row cast on 3 sts to replace each set of the 3 sts bound off.

SLEEVES ... Starting at cuff with Melton Green, cast on 64 (68, 72) sts. Work in stockinette st for ½ inch, ending with a purl row. Next row: Purl across (hemline). Now work in stripe pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 12th row 15 times. Then increase 1 st at both ends every 10th row until there are on needle 108 (112, 116) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures 17 (17½, 18) inches from hemline, ending with same color as on Back at underarm.

To Shape Top: Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends every 4th row 14 (16, 18) times. Decrease 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row 5 times. De­crease 1 st at end of each row until 38 sts remain. Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 14 sts.

Block to measurements. Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew edges of collar together. Sew back of collar along back neck edge. Turn hems of sleeves and lower edge to wrong side and sew in place. Turn front facings to wrong side, matching buttonholes and sew in place. Sew front of collar along back neck edge. Sew buttonholes together in buttonhole st. With sewing thread, sew along front and collar edges ¼ inch in from outside edge. Sew in sleeves. Sew ribbon to wrong side at waist. Sew on large buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Sew 3 buttons at cuffs of sleeves ½ inch apart.

SKIRT

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with Melton Green, cast on 208 (216, 224) sts. Work in stockinette st for ¾ inch, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline).

Continue in stockinette st until piece measures 3¾ inches from hemline, ending with a purl row. 1st decrease row: K 12 (16, 20), * k 2 tog, k 24. Repeat from * 6 more times, k 2 tog, k 12 (16, 20). Work without decreasing until piece measures 7½ inches from hemline, ending with a purl row. 2nd decrease row: K 12 (16, 20), * k 2 tog, k 23. Repeat from * 6 more times, k 2 tog, k 11 (15, 19). Work without decreasing until piece measures 11 inches from hemline, ending with a purl row. 3rd decrease row: K 11 (15, 19), * k 2 tog, k 22. Repeat from * 6 more times, k 2 tog, k 11 (15, 19). Work without decreasing until piece measures 14¼ inches from hemline, ending with a purl row. 4th decrease row: K 11 (15, 19), * k 2 tog, k 21. Repeat from * 6 more times, k 2 tog, k 10 (14, 18). Work without decreas­ing until piece measures 17¼ inches from hemline, ending with a purl row. 5th decrease row: K 10 (14, 18), * k 2 tog, k 20. Repeat from * 6 more times, k 2 tog, k 10 (14, 18). FRONT ... Work exactly as for Back.

Block to measurements. Sew up side seams, leaving 7 inches free at top of left side for zipper. Turn hem to wrong side and sew in place. Turn narrow hems at zipper opening to wrong side and sew in place. Cut ribbon to waist measure­ment allowing 1 inch more. Sew ribbon to waist on wrong side, leaving 1 inch free at side opening. Sew in zipper. Sew snap fasteners to ribbon at side opening.
