MATERIALS: Beehive Scotch Fingering Yarn, Patonised Shrink-resist Finish, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins): Sizes 12 and 14 — 7 skeins each of White and Tartan No. 1316; Size 16 — 8 skeins each of White and Tartan No. 1316 ... Royal Society Aluminum or Plastic Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) ... 5 large buttons ... 6 small buttons.

GAUGE: 9 sts measure 1 inch; 19 rows measure 2 inches.

NOTE: When carrying Tartan over White block or White over Tartan block, twist unused color around every other st, being careful not to pull up yarn too tightly.

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with Tartan and No. 1 knitting needles, cast on 190 (200, 208) sts. Work in stocki­nette st, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, for 1 inch, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline).

Change to No. 3 knitting needles and. continuing in stocki­nette st, work in pattern following chart to B, then repeat from A to B. 13 more times, then complete row to cor­respond with beginning. Continue to follow chart until top of chart is reached, then repeat from C to D, being careful to work end of row to correspond with beginning

At the Same Time

decrease 1 st at both ends of every 9th row until there are on needle 170 (180, 188) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures 11½ (12, 12½) inches from hemline.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off at the beginning of next 2 rows 6 (7, 8) sts. Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of the following 2
rows. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next 6 rows. Decrease 1 st at end of each row until there remain 124 (128, 132) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures 8 (8½, 8¾) inches from first row of armhole shaping.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of next row — 1 st on right hand needle. Work across next 33 (34, 35) sts. Bind off next 20 (22, 24) sts (neck shaping). Work to end of row. Work over the last 40 (41, 42) sts only. Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of next row and every other row 5 (4, 4) times

At the Same Time

bind off at the beginning of each knit row (neck edge) 5 sts once, 2 sts twice, 1 st once. Bind off remaining — (7, 8) sts. Attach yarn to opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond, reversing shapings.

LEFT FRONT ... Starting at lower edge with Tartan and No. 1 knitting needles, cast on 113 (117, 121) sts. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a knit row. Cast on 19 sts at the beginning of next row (front facing) and knit across (hemline).

Change to No. 3 knitting needles and continuing in stocki­nette stitch, work in pattern following the same chart as for Back to B. then repeat from A to B. 8 more times, ending with — on Size 12 (k 1 W, k 1 T) 4 times: on Sizes 14 and 16 (k 1 W, k 1 T) 3 times and k 1 W. Continuing to follow chart as before, decrease 1 st at side edge on every 20th row 4 times.

Work without decreasing until piece measures 11½ (12, 12½) inches from hemline, ending at side edge.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 6 (7, 8) sts at the beginning of next row. Bind off at armhole edge every other row 4 sts once, 2 sts 3 times. Decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row until there remain 102 (104, 106) sts.

Work without decreasing until piece measures 6¾ (7, 7¼) inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge.

To Shape Neck: Bind off at the beginning of next row 40 (41, 42) sts. Bind off 3 sts at neck edge every other row 4 times. Decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row 8 times

At the Same Time

when piece measures 8 (8½, 8¾) inches from first row of armhole shaping, bind off 6 sts at shoulder edge on next row and every other row 7 (6, 6) times. Bind off at shoulder edge remaining — (7, 8) sts.

RIGHT FRONT ... Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings and making a set of buttonholes 7 sts in from front edge when piece measures from hemline 5 (5½, 6) inches and every 3 inches thereafter, until 5 sets of buttonholes in all are made — to make a set of buttonholes, on one row bind off 5 sts, k 14, bind off 5 sts; on next row cast on 5 sts to replace each of the 5 sts bound off.

SLEEVES ... With Tartan and No. 1 knitting needles, cast on 90 (92, 96) sts. Work in stockinette st for inch, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline).

Change to No. 3 knitting needles and work in pattern, following chart to B, then repeat from A to B across, end­ing same as beginning until top of chart is reached, then repeat from C to D

At the Same Time

increasing 1 st at both ends of every 7th row 12 times, then increase 1 st at both ends every 5th row until there are on needles 132 (134, 138) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures 17 (18, 18½) inches from hemline.

To Shape Top: Bind off 5 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the following 2 rows. K 3 tog at both ends of each row 6 times. Now decrease 1 st at end of each row 12 (13, 15) times. Decrease 1 st at both ends of each row 20 times. Bind off 3 sts at the begin­ning of next 2 rows. Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of the following 2 rows. Bind off 8 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR ... With Tartan and No. 3 knitting needles, cast on 124 (128, 132) sts and purl across. Work in pattern following chart to B, then repeat from A to B across, end­ing same as beginning. Increase 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row 4 times. Continue in pattern until top of chart is reached, then repeat from C to D, still increasing as before, until there are on needle 138 (142, 146) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures 3 inches, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Continue in pattern, decreas­ing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there remain 112 (116, 120) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures 3 inches from hemline. Bind off.

Block to measurements. Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Turn hems of sleeve and lower edge to wrong side and sew in place. Turn front facings to wrong side, matching buttonholes, and sew in place. Sew button­holes together in buttonhole st. Turn hem at side edges of collar and sew in place. Fold collar in half and sew side edges together. Sew on collar. Sew on large buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Sew 3 small buttons on each cuff of sleeve ¾ inch apart.
