Ladies' Jiffy Mittens Pattern #157

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #10 single pointed
NOTE: Use double strands of yarn

RIGHT MITTEN: Cast on 26 sts, using the yarn double and work as follows: Purl 14 sts, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2. Work in the pattern: 1st row: K 2, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 14. 2nd row: P 14, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2. 3rd row: K 2, p 2, slip the next 2 sts onto a dble pt needle and hold in back of work; knit the next 2 sts; bring the 2 sts on the dble pt needle to the front; knit the next 2 sts; knit the next 2 sts off the dble pt needle (twist), p 2, k 14. 4th row: Repeat row 2. 5th row: Repeat row 1. 6th row: Repeat row 2. 7th row: Repeat row 1. 8th row: Repeat row 2. Repeat these 8 rows for the pattern. Work until the piece measures 3 inches in all. (Note: Keep the pattern in the panel until you come to the tip decreases).
THUMB INCREASES: Work 14 sts, cast on 1 st, k 1, cast on 1 st, k 11 sts. Next row: P 16, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2. 2nd inc: Work 14 sts, cast on 1 st, k 3, cast on 1 st, k 11 sts. Next row: P 18, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2. 3rd inc: Work 14 sts, cast on 1 st, k 5, cast on 1 st, k 11 sts. Next row: P 20, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2. 4th inc: Work 14 sts, cast on 1 st, k 7, cast on 1 st, k 11 sts. Next row: P 22, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2.
THUMB: Work 14 sts and place onto a st holder; knit 9 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining 11 sts onto a 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st at end of the 9 sts; purl across the 10 sts, cast on 1 st (11 sts). Knit 1 row, purl 1 row for 10 rows. Knit 2 sts together across next row. Break yarn, leaving 9 inches. Thread a darning needle and pull through sts. Fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew up thumb.
HAND: Place the sts off first st holder onto a needle; tie yarn in, pick up and knit 3 sts on thumb gusset; knit the sts off 2nd st holder (28 sts). Now work in the pattern until the mitten measures 3¾ inches above thumb gusset.
TIP DECREASES: K 2, p 2 tog, k 6, p 2 tog, k 4, k 2 tog, k 6, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 2. Next row: P 14, k 1, p 6, k 1, p 2. 2nd dec: K 2, k 2 tog, k 4, slip 1, psso, k 4, k 2 tog, k 4, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 2. Next row: Purl across all sts. Last dec: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn leaving 12 inches. Thread a darning needle and finish as tip of thumb. Sew up side.
LEFT MITTEN: Cast on 26 sts. P 2, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 14. Work to correspond to the right mitten. Thumb increases begin with k 11, cast on 1 st, k 1, cast on 1 st, k 2, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 2.

This is a vintage pattern published in 1950. Unfortunately, it's not unusual for vintage patterns to be a bit confusing. I've doubled checked the original and the pattern is correct as published, however, I'm not familiar with knitting mittens, so I'm not able to help with your questions.
