REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 2-ounces of white and 1-ounce of Red, 4-ply Knitting Worsted
NEEDLES: 1-pr. each of #3 and #8 single pointed
PATTERN: ROW 1: * Slip 1 st as if to purl, yarn over, k 2 tog, bring yarn to front of work; repeat from * across row, ending with slip 1, yarn over, k 2 tog. Repeat this row for the pattern.
14-yr. 12 rows of red, 8 rows of white, 8 rows of red, 4 rows of white, 4 rows of red, 4 rows of white. Break off red.
12-yr. 10 rows of red, 6 rows of white, 6 rows of red, 4 rows of white, 4 rows of red, 4 rows of white. Break off red.
10-yr. 8 rows of red, 6 rows of white, 4 rows of red, 4 rows of white, 4 rows of red, 4 rows of white. Break off red.
RIGHT MITTEN: Using the #8 needles cast on 39 sts for 10-yr old; 42 sts for 12-yr old; 45 sts for 14-yr old. Work in the above pattern. Change to the #3 needles and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 8 rows. Using the white yarn knit across decreasing to 38 sts for 10-yr old; 40 sts for 12-yr old; 42 sts for 14-yr old. Purl 1 row, knit 1 row for 5 rows on all sizes.
THUMB INCREASES: Always done on a knit row. With a purl 1 row between each increase.

LEFT MITTEN: Work the cuff the same way. When ready to start the thumb increases reverse the instructions.
