REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 4-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #8 single pointed

USE THE YARN 2 STRANDS THROUGH ENTIRE MITTEN

RIGHT MITTEN: Cuff: Using the yarn 2 strands, cast on 30 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2½ inches. Now work in the stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 4 rows. THUMB INCREASES: 1st inc: K 15 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st, k 12 sts. Purl across next row. 2nd inc: K 15 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 3, inc. 1st in next st, k 12 sts. Purl next row. 3rd inc: K 15 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 5, inc. 1 st in next st, k 12 sts. Purl next row. 4th inc: K 15 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 7, inc. 1 st in next st, k 12 sts. Purl next row. 5th inc: K 15 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 9, inc. 1 st in next st, k 12 sts. Purl next row.

THUMB SEPARATION: K 16 sts and place onto a st holder; k 11 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st, turn and purl over 12 sts, cast on 1 st (13 sts). Work in stockinette stitch on these sts for 2¼ inches. 1st dec: * k 1 st, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl 2 sts together across next row. Break yarn leaving 7 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw through the sts. Fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew up thumb.

HAND: Place the sts off the first st holder onto a needle, tie yarn in, with the same needle pick up and knit 4 sts along thumb gusset; knit the sts off 2nd st holder. Work on all these sts in stockinette stitch until the mittens measure 4¼ inches above the thumb. DECREASES AT TIP OF MITTEN: 1st dec: * k 6 sts, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row, end with k 1. Purl across next row. 2nd dec: * k 5 sts, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl across next row. 3rd dec: * k 4 sts, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 4th dec: K 2 st together across row. Break yarn leaving enough to sew with. Draw through the remaining sts and finish as tip of thumb. Sew up side of mitten.

LEFT MITTEN: Work the same as the right one until you come to the thumb increases. Reverse the instructions—1st inc: K 12 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st, k 15 sts. Work remainder of mitten to correspond to the right one.
