REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 2-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted, 10-yards of angora for trim

NEEDLES: 1-pr. #4 single pointed

CUFF: Using the yarn, cast on 36 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for an inch. Beading row: K 1, * yarn over, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with yarn over, k 2 tog, k 1. Work in ribbing again for an inch. Work in stockinette stitch for a ½-inch, ending with a purl row.

THUMB INCREASES: 1st inc: K 17 sts; inc. 1 st in each of the next 2 sts; knit to end of row. Purl next row. 2nd inc: K 18 sts; place marker on needle; inc 1 st in each of the next 2 sts; place a marker on needle, knit to end of row. Purl next row. 3rd inc: Knit to marker, slip marker to right hand needle, inc 1 st in next st, knit to within 1 st of 2nd marker, inc 1 st in next st, slip marker as before, knit to end of row. Purl next row. Repeat these last 2 rows until you have 12 sts between marker, ending with a purl row.

THUMB: Knit to within first marker and slip these sts onto a st holder, knit next 12 sts and leave on the needle, place the remaining sts onto a 2nd st holder. At end of the 12 sts that are on the needle, cast on 2 sts.

Work in stockinette st on these sts for 1¼ inches, ending with a purl row. Knit 2 sts together across next row. Break yarn leaving 8-inches. Thread a darning needle and draw through remaining sts. Fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew up thumb.

HAND: Place the sts from first st holder onto a needle; tie yarn in, pick up and knit 2 sts on thumb gusset, knit the sts off 2nd st holder. Work in stockinette stitch for 2 inches. Tip Decreases: 1st dec: * k 2 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 tog. Purl next row. 2nd dec: * k 1 st, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 3rd dec: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn leaving 10 inches. Finish off as on tip of thumb. Sew up side of mitten. MAKE THE OTHER MITTEN THE SAME WAY.

Trimming: Using the angora, make 1 row of s c around edge of cuff. Using the yarn double, make a chain of 12 inches. Thread in through the beading row. Make 4 pompoms and sew onto ends of chains.
