Commuter Vest Pattern

Instructions are for size 12, changes for sizes 14 and 16 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS—Bear Brand Wonderized Casa-Laine Sport Yarn, 4 balls.
Bucilla Embroidery Wool, Art. 024, 4 skeins each of Con­trasting Colors B and C.
Bucilla Plastic Knitting Needles, 1 pair Size 3.
Bucilla Steel Crochet Hook, Size 2.

MEASUREMENTS OF GARMENT—At bustline buttoned 33 (35-37) ins.
Width of back at underarm 15 (16-17) ins.

GAUGE:  7 sts = 1 inch; 29 rows = 2 inches

BACK—Cast on 86 (94-102) sts. Row 1—K 2, * p 2, k 2; re­peat from * to end.
Row 2—P 2, * k 2, p 2; repeat from * to end. Repeat these 2 rows of ribbing until 4 ins. from beg., increasing 1 st in last row; 87 (95-103) sts.

PatternRow 1—P. Row 2—right side—P 1, * with yarn in front of work, slip 1 st as to p, p 1; repeat from * to end. Row 3—P. Row 4—P 2, * slip 1 st as before, p 1; repeat from *, end slip 1 st, p 2. Repeat these 4 rows for pat. Work until 1 in. Inc. 1 st each side of next row; repeat incs. every ½ in. 8 times, with care to carry out pat.; always have 1 slipped st above a p st of 2nd row below; 105 (113-121) sts.

Work even until 6½ ins. above rib­bing. Mark beg. and end of last row for beg. of armholes.

Armholes—Dec. 1 st each side every 2nd row 7 (9-11) times; 91 (95-99) sts. Work even until armholes measure 6¾ (7-7¼) ins., straight up from markers.

Shoulders—Bind off 6 (8-10) sts at beg. of next 2 rows; 8 sts at beg. of next 6 rows. Bind off remaining 31 sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT—Cast on 59 (63-67) sts. Work pat., mark beg. of row 2 for underarm edge. Keeping front edge even, dec. 1 st at underarm edge every ½ in. 5 times; 54 (58-62) sts. Work 2 ins. even. On next row, inc. 1 st at underarm edge; repeat inc. every ½ in. 9 times; 64 (68-72) sts. Work even until same length as back to armhole, end at underarm edge. Bind off 8 (9-10) sts at beg. of next row for underarm. Dec. 1 st at armhole edge every 2nd row 8 (9-10) times; 48 (50-52) sts. Work 4 rows even.

Neck Shaping—On next row, dec. 1 st at front edge; repeat dec. every 4th row 17 times; 30 (32-34) sts. Work even until armhole is same length as on back, end at armhole edge.
Shape shoulder as on back.

RIGHT FRONT—Cast on 59 (63-67) sts. Work to correspond to left front shaping at opposite sides, mark end of row 2 for underarm edge.

WEAVING—Thread tapestry needle with B, working from right side of right front, beg. at lower corner of front edge, insert needle under first slip st loop of first row, draw yarn through, insert needle under next slip st loop at left in 2nd row above and draw yarn through, continue weaving diagonally in this way to underarm edge, leave an end, do not fasten. See detail photo. * Counting along first slip st row, skip 5 loops and beg. under next loop work another stripe with B in same manner as before, parallel to last stripe worked; leave an end, do not fasten. Repeat from * across lower edge. Continue to work B stripes over entire front having 5 slip st loops either diagonally or horizontally between stripes.
With B, beg. in same loops at lower edge, weave stripes diagonally toward front edge. Continue to weave B stripes same distance apart over entire front forming diamond pat. Weave C diamonds in same way in loops directly above B diamonds, see photo.

FINISHING—Steam each piece separately. Baste seams and try on vest. Fasten all ends. Sew seams.

CROCHETED BORDER—Beg. at lower edge of right front, work 1 row sc around front and neck edges, keeping work flat, having an even number of sts. Mark position on right front edge of 7 buttonholes of 3 sts each, evenly spaced, with top buttonhole just below beg. of neck shaping and 7th button­hole as near to lower edge as possible.

Buttonhole row—Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first sc, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st; repeat from * around to first marker for buttonhole, ch 3, skip 3 sts, 1 sc in next st, finish row, re­peating buttonhole at each marker, end with sc in each of last 2 sts.

Row 3—Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first sc, * ch 1, skip sc, 1 sc in space under next ch 1; repeat from *, working 1 sc—ch 1— 1 sc in each buttonhole, end with 1 sc in last sc. Fasten off. Beg. at left underarm seam, work 1 sc in first st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st; repeat from * on lower edge of front; 3 sc in corner; continue pat. on front and neck edges and to right underarm seam. Fasten off. Work 1 row sc and 1 row pat. around each armhole holding in to desired size. Steam.
