SIZES 2 (3).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 2, the second for size 3.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN BABY WOOL 5 (5) balls; 1 pair Knit­ting Needles No. 2; 1 pair Knitting Nee­dles No. 4; 1 steel Crochet Hook No. 2; 8 pearl buttons ¾ inch in diameter; 5 small pearl buttons.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 21 (22) inches; blouse to underarm 5½ (5¾) inches; pants crotch to waist 8½ (9) inches.

GAUGE—6½ sts. = 1 inch. 9 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Body Stockinette St., (knit 1 row, purl 1 row). Neck, arm and waist bands ribbing of K1, P1.

BLOUSEBACK—Using No. 2 nee­dles, cast on 70 (74) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 12 (14) rows. Change to No. 4 needles and work in stockinette st. until back measures 4½ (4¾) inches from bottom. Inc. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 5 times. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, cast on 12 (14) sts.; (104 (112) sts.). Work ½ inch even. Work first 52 (56) sts. Place remaining 52 (56) sts. on holder. On 52 (56) sts. of right shoulder work even until back measures 3 (3¼) inches straight up from sts. cast on for sleeves. At neck edge, bind off 18 (20) sts. Work 2½ inches even. Place these sts. on a holder and work other shoulder to correspond, re­versing shaping. Cast on 36 (40) for cen­ter front of neck. Now work across all 104 (112) sts. until work measures 8 (8½) inches from sts. cast on for sleeves. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 12 (14) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row, 5 times; (70 (74) sts.). Finish to correspond with back.

FINISHING—Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Using No. 2 needles, pick up 60 (64) sts. across bottom of sleeves. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1¼ (1½) inches. Bind off loosely, knitting the K sts. and purling the P sts. Using No. 2 needles, pick up 105 (111) sts. around neck. Mark 1 st. at each of 4 corners as seam st.

Work in ribbing of K1, P1 (al­ways knit seam st. on right side and purl st. on wrong side), dec. 1 st. each side of each seam st. every other row 4 times. Bind off loosely. Work 2 rows of S. C. around back opening, making 5 button loops at even intervals on 2nd row. Sew small pearl buttons in place.

PANTSBACK—Using No. 4 needles, cast on 104 (108) sts. Purl 1 row. Dec. for crotch as follows: Row 1—K42 (44), slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K16, K2 tog., K42, (44). Row 2—Purl. Row 3—K42 (44), slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K14, K2, tog., K42 (44). Row 4—Purl. Continue in this man­ner to dec. 1 st. each side of crotch gusset every other row, until all crotch sts. are worked; (86 (90) sts.). Purl 1 row. Then work dec. as follows: K20 (22), slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K42, K2 tog., K20 (22). Dec. in this manner every 8th row 6 times more, having 2 sts. less in center section on each dec., (72 (76) sts.). Work even until pants measure 7½ (8) inches from crotch center. Change to No. 2 needles and work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 6 rows. Work 8 buttonholes as follows on next row: *Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 15 (16) sts., bind off 4 sts., repeat from * across row, ending in ribbing of K1, P1 for 15 (16) sts. On next row, cast on 4 sts. over those bound off on row below. Work 6 rows more in K1, P1 ribbing. Bind off loosely, knitting the K sts. and purling the P sts.

FRONT—Work in same manner as back.

FINISHING—Sew crotch seam. Sew side seams of pants, leaving a half inch opening on each side in center of waist ribbing for vertical buttonholes. Sew but­tons in place on blouse ribbing. Work 1 row of S. C. around bottom of pants.
