Snow Pal Outfit Pattern

SIZES—3 (4-5).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 3, the second for size 4, the third for size 5.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN MARVEL TWIST Jacket, Cap and Mit­tens 4 (4-5) skeins; Snow pants 3 (3-4) skeins; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 3; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 5; 1 set double point needles No. 3; 1 set double point needles No. 5; 1 steel Crochet Hook No. 00; 6 buttons 1 inch in diameter.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 24 (25-26) inches; blouse to underarm 10 (10½-11) inches; outside pants seam, including cuff 24 (25-26) inches.

GAUGE—6 sts. = 1 inch. 8 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERNJacket—Ribbing of K1, P1 with front panel in Seed Stitch K1, P1 across row (if row ends with K, start next row with K, if row ends with P, start next row with P.) Pants—Seed Stitch.

JACKETBACK—Using No. 5 nee­dles, cast on 70 (74-78) sts. Work in rib­bing of K1, P1 until back measures 10 (10½-11) inches from start, or desired length to armhole. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 3 (4-4) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 2 (2-3) times; (60 (62-64) sts. on needle). Work even in ribbing until armhole measures 4½ (4¾-5) inches straight up from underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 (6-8) rows, bind off 6 (6-5) sts. Bind off remaining 24 (26-24) sts. for back of neck.

RIGHT FRONT—Using No. 5 nee­dles, cast on 53 (55-57) sts. Work seed st. for 33 (35-35) sts. (center panel) and ribbing of K1, P1 for the remaining 20 (20-22) sts. Continue in this manner to keep 33 (35-35) sts. at center front in seed st. and remaining sts. in ribbing as on back. When work measures 10 (10½-11) inches from start, at beg. of arm edge, bind off 4 (5-5) sts. Dec. 1 st. at arm edge 3 times; (46 (47-49) sts.) Work even until armhole measures 3½ (3¾-4) inches straight up from underarm. At neck edge, bind off 26 (27-27) sts. and on remaining 20 (20-22) sts. work back and forth in pattern, dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row twice. Work even until armhole measures 4½ (4¾-5) inches straight up from underarm. At beg. of arm edge, bind off 6 (6-5) sts., 3 (3-4) times.

LEFT FRONT—Work to correspond with right front, reversing shaping mak­ing a buttonhole as follows: when work measures 1 inch from start, starting at arm edge, work ribbing of K1, P1 for 20 (20-24) sts., work seed st. for 5 sts., bind off next 5 sts., work in seed st. for 13 sts., bind off 5 sts., work in seed st. to end of row. On next row, cast on 5 sts. over those bound off on row below. Repeat these but­tonholes when work measures 7 (7⅜-7¾) inches and 13 (13¾-14½) inches from bottom, (3 sets buttonholes in all).

SLEEVES—Using No. 3 needles, cast on 40 (40-44) sts. Work ribbing of K1, P1 for 3 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and continue working ribbing of K1, P1, inc. 1 st. each end of needle on first row. Repeat this inc. every inch until there are 52 (54-56) sts. on needle. Work even until sleeve measures 11½ (12½-14) inches from start. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 4 sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row until 28 (30-32) sts. remain. At the beg. of each of the next 6 rows, bind off 2 sts. Bind off remain­ing 16 (18-20) sts.

COLLAR—Using No. 5 needles, cast on 65 (67-69) sts. Work seed st. for 3 inches. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoul­der and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, matching underarm seams. Sew col­lar on, starting from center of collar and garment and sewing to each end, having ends of collar meet at center front when jacket is buttoned. Sew buttons in place on right front. Starting at bottom edge of right front where seed st. panel begins, work 1 row of S. C. across bottom and up right front to point where collar is joined. Fasten off. Starting at point where collar is joined on left front, work 1 row of S. C. down left front and across bottom to end of seed st. panel. Fasten off. With right side of work toward you, work 1 row of S. C. around collar.

SNOWPANTS—Using No. 3 needles, cast on 72 (76-80) sts. Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2 inches. Change to No. 5 needles, and pattern st., work 1 row, inc. 1 st. in every 6th (7th-8th) st., 12 (10-10) times across row; (84 (86-90) sts.). Work even in pattern until work meas­ures 6½ (7-7) inches from beg. Inc. 1 st. at the beg. of each of the next 14 (16-16) rows; (98 (102-106) sts.). Work 2 rows even. Dec. 1 st. at the beg. of each of the next 14 (16-16) rows; (84 (86-90) sts.). Work 1 inch even. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every 6th row 10 (11-12) times; (64 (64-66) sts.). Work 5(5-7) rows even. Dec. at even intervals across 1 row to 48 (50-52) sts. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 4½ inches. Bind off loosely. Work other leg to cor­respond.

SUSPENDERS—Make 2. Using No. 3 needles, cast on 8 sts. K 1 row, inc. 1 st. in every st. across row; (16 sts.) Then work as follows: *K1 yarn to front of work, slip next st. as if to purl, yarn to back of work, repeat from * across row, ending yarn to front of work, slip next st. as if to purl. Repeat this row until piece measures 18 inches, or desired length to fit over child's shoulders to back of snow pants. Bind off as follows: K2 tog., * K2 tog., pass first st. over second and repeat from * across row.

CAP—Using No. 5 double point nee­dles, cast on 120 sts. and join, being care­ful not to twist sts. (40 sts. on each of 3 needles). Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 7 (7½-8) inches. Then dec. for top as follows: *K2, K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. K2 rounds even. *K1, K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. K 1 round even. *K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. K1 round even. Repeat last dec. round; (15 remaining sts.). Break yarn and draw through all sts. Pull tight and fasten off on inside of cap.

MITTENS—Using No. 3 double point needles, cast on 36 sts. and join; (12 sts. on each of 3 needles). Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2½ (2½-2¾) inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work as fol­lows: For Size 3 only: *K7, K2 tog., re­peat from * to end of round. For Size 4 only: *K14, K2 tog. repeat from * to end of round; (32 (34-36) sts. on needles). K 2 rounds even. Then start thumb inc. as follows: Round 1—Inc. 1 in each of the first 2 sts., knit to end of round. Round 2—Knit. Round 3—Inc. 1 st. in first st., K2, inc. 1 st. in next st., knit to end of round. Round 4—Knit. Round 5—Inc. 1 in first st., K4, inc. 1 st. in next st., knit to end of round. Round 6—Knit. Continue in this manner to inc. every other round, having 2 sts. more between inc., until there are 8 (10-10) sts. between inc.; (42 (46-48) sts. on needles). Knit 1 round even after last inc. K2, slip next 8 (10-10) sts. onto holder for thumb. Cast on 2 sts. in place of thumb sts. and knit to end of round; (36 (38-40) sts. on nee­dles). Knit round and round for 2 (2¼-2½) inches. Then dec. as follows: *K2, K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. K 2 rounds even. *K1, K 2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. K 1 round even. *K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. Break yarn and draw through all sts. Fas­ten securely on inside of mitten.

THUMB—Slip 8 (10-10) sts. from holder onto 2 needles, join yarn and pick up 4 sts. over the 2 sts. cast on for palm. Dec. 1 st. over the 4 picked up every round twice; (10 (12-12) sts.) K7 (9-9) rounds even. Dec. as follows: For Size 3 only: *K3, K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. Knit 1 round even. *K2, K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. Knit 1 round even. *K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. Break yarn, draw through all sts. and fasten off. For Sizes 4 and 5 only: *K2, K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. Knit 1 round even. *K1, K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. Knit 1 round even. *K2 tog., repeat from * to end of round. Finish top as for Size 3.
