Once Upon a Time Outfit Pattern

SIZES—8 (10-12).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 8, the second for size 10, the third for size 12.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN DRESSY 15 (16-18) skeins; 1 24-inch cir­cular needle No. 2; 1 24-inch circular needle No. 1; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 2; 1 steel Crochet Hook No. 4; 10 buttons; tape or ribbon for waist; 1 yard ½-inch grosgrain ribbon.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 26½ (28-30) inches, waist 23 (24-25) inches, skirt length 16½ (18½-20) inches, jacket to underarm 9½ (10-10½) inches, sleeve to underarm 14 (15½-16½) inches.

GAUGE—7 sts. = 1 inch. 10 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Ribbing of K6, P2, K3, P2. Note: The K6 panel changes in skirt as dec. are made. Collar—Seed St. K1, P1 across row (if row ends with K, start next row with K; if row ends with P, start next row with P).

SKIRT—Using No. 2 circular needle, cast on 378 (392-406) sts., join being careful not to twist sts. Work in pattern as follows: *K20 (21-22), P2, K3, P2, re­peat from * to end of round. Repeat this round until skirt measures 1 (2-3) inches. Dec. 1 st. at the beg. of each wide knit panel for 1 round (the P2, K3, P2 panels of the pattern remain the same through­out the skirt; all dec. are made in wide knit sections; there will be 14 sts. dec. each dec. round). Work even in pattern until skirt measures 2 (3-4½) inches from bottom. Now dec. 1 st. at end of each wide knit panel. Continue to dec. in this man­ner, first one st. at the beg. of wide knit panel and then at the end of wide knit panel every inch 11 (13-13) times more. For Size 8 Only: Work ½ inch even. Then dec. 1 st. at the end of each wide knit panel. Work ½ inch even. Then dec. 1 st. at the beg. of every other knit panel; (175 (182-196) sts. and 14 (16-17½) inches from start, or 1¼ inches shorter than de­sired length). Change to No. 1 circular needle and work 1 inch even in pattern. Bind off loosely. Do not break thread, but work 1 row of S. C. all around top of skirt. Then work beading for elastic or tape on inside of skirt as follows: *Ch. 5, fasten with a slip st. diagonally ½ inch below, ch. 5, slip st. ½ inch diagonally to top of skirt, repeat from * around top of skirt. Work 1 row of S. C. around bot­tom of skirt.

JACKETBACK—Using No. 2 straight needles, cast on 93 (98-104) sts. Work in pattern as follows: For Size 8 only: Row 1—K4, *P2, K3, P2, K6, re­peat from * across row, ending K4, in­stead of K6. Row 2—P4, *K2, P3, K2, P6, repeat from * across row, ending P4, in­stead of P6. For Size 10 only: Row 1—P2, K3, P2, *K6, P2, K3, P2, repeat from * across row. Row 2—K2, P3, K2, *P6, K2, P3, K2, repeat from * across row. For Size 12 only: Row 1—K3, *P2, K3, P2, K6, repeat from * across row, ending K3, instead of K6. Row 2—P3, *K2, P3, K2, P6, repeat from * across row, end­ing P3, instead of P6. Repeat these 2 rows for back pattern. Work even until back measures 9½ (10-10½) inches from start, or desired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 4 (5-6) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 4 times, (77 (80-84) sts.). Work even until armhole measures 5½ (6-6¼) inches straight up from under­arm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 rows, bind off 8 (8-9) sts. Bind off re­maining 29 (32-30) sts. for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT—Cast on 64 (66-68) sts. Work in pattern as follows: For Size 8 only: Row 1—*K6, P2, K3, P2, repeat from * across row, ending K6, P2, K4. Row 2—P4, *K2, P6, K2, P3, repeat from * across row, ending K2, P6. For Size 10 only: Row 1—K2, P2, K3, P2, *K6, P2, K3, P2, repeat from * across row, ending K5. Row 2—P5, *K2, P3, K2, P6, repeat from * across row, ending K2, P3, K2, P2. For Size 12 only: Row 1—K3, *P2, K3, P2, K6, repeat from * across row. Row 2—*P6, K2, P3, K2, repeat from * across row, ending P3. Repeat these 2 rows for pattern. When front measures 9½ (10-10½) inches from start, at beg. of arm edge, bind off 6 sts. Dec. 1 st. at arm edge, every other row 4 (5-4) times, (54 (55-58 sts.). Work even until armhole meas­ures 4¼ (4¾-5) inches straight up from underarm, ending at arm edge. Work in pattern over first 30 (30-33) sts., bind off next 14 (16-16) sts. and on 10 (9-9) sts. left, work back and forth in pattern, binding off 2 (3-3) sts. at neck edge every other row 5 (3-3) times. Working on 30 (30-33) sts. of shoulder in pattern, dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row 6 times. When armhole measures 5½ (6-6¼) inches straight up from underarm, at arm edge, bind off 8 (8-9) sts. 3 times.

RIGHT FRONT—Work to correspond with left front, reversing shaping and making buttonholes as follows: when work measures 1½ (1½-2) inches from bottom, starting at front edge, work 5 sts. in pat­tern, bind off 3, work in pattern for 21 sts., bind off 3 and finish row in pattern. Next row, cast on 3 sts. over those bound off on previous row. Repeat these buttonholes every 3 (3¼-3¼) inches 4 times more, (5 sets buttonholes in all).

SLEEVES—Using No. 2 straight nee­dles, cast on 54 (56-58) sts. Work in pat­tern as follows: For Size 8 only: Follow pattern given for back. For Size 10 only: Row 1—K5, *P2, K3, P2, K6, repeat from * across row, ending K5, instead of K6. Row 2—P5, *K2, P3, K2, P6, repeat from * across row, ending P5. For Size 12 only: Row 1—*K6, P2, K3, P2, repeat from * across row, ending K6. Row 2—*P6, K2, P3, K2, repeat from * across row, ending P6. Repeat these 2 rows, inc. 1 st. each end of needle every 8th row 8 (8-9) times, (70 (72-76) sts.). Work even until sleeve measures 14 (15½-16½) inches from start, or desired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 6 (6-7) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row for 2½ (2¾-3) inches. At the beg. of each of the next 6 rows bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR—Using No. 2 straight nee­dles, cast on 81 (83-85) sts. Work in seed st., inc. 1 st. at the beg. of every row for 20 rows. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoul­der and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, matching underarm seams. Work 1 row of S. C. around 3 sides of collar, leav­ing unworked the side to be sewed to jacket. Sew collar to jacket from center of left front to center of right front. Work 1 row S. C. up each front from bottom to point where collar is joined. Sew grosgrain ribbon to inside of each front edge. Sew buttons in place on left front.
