Knitting Needles: One pair each "Boye" Sizes 4, 5 and 8 and one crochet hook Size 0

COAT

Gauge: Pat Stitch with double yarn on Size 8 needles - 4 sts to 1 inch; 13 rows to 2 inches.

Instructions are for a 39(39¼-39¾-40¼-40½) inch coat measured from hemline to shoulder allowing 2 inches for blocking. To lengthen or shorten make adjustment before first dec.

Back: With Size 5 needles and 1 strand of A - cast on 120(123-128-131-136) loosely. K 1 row and P 1 row for 1½ inches, end with a P row.

Hemline: Join in 2nd strand of A, change to Size 8 needles and dec as follows: K 4(3-3-2-2), * K 2 tog, K 3, repeat from * to last 6(5-5-4-4), K 2 tog, K to end. K the 97(99-103-105-109) sts for turn.
Work in pat as follows:

Row 1 - Right side: K 6(1-3-4-6), * with yarn at back sl 1, K 5, repeat from * to last 7(2-4-5-7), sl 1, K to end.

Row 2: P.
Repeat last 2 rows to 3(3-3-5-5) inches above hemline, end on wrong side. Dec 1 each side on next row then every 2½ inches 9(9-9-8-8) times more. Work on the 77(79-83-87-91) sts to 29 inches above hemline or desired length to underarm, end with a P row. Width across back is 19¼(19¾-20¾-21¾-22¾) inches.

Armholes: Bind off 3 at beg of next 4 rows. Dec 1 each side every row 3(3-3-5-6) times then every other row 1(1-2-1-1) times. Work on the 57(59-61-63-65) sts to 8(8¼-8¾-9¼-9½) inches above underarm, end with a P row.

Shoulders: Bind off 6 at beg of next 4(4-6-6-4) rows then On Sizes 10(12-18) Only, bind off 5(5-7) at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off 23(25-25-27-27) for neck.

Left Front: With Size 5 needles and 1 strand of A - cast on 63(65-67-69-71). K 1 row and P 1 row for 1½ inches, end with a P row. Join in 2nd strand of A. Change to Size 8 needles.

Hemline Dec: K 3(2-3-1-2), * K 2 tog, K 3, repeat from * to last 5(3-4-3-4), K 2 tog, K to end, cast on 11 for front edge and facing. K the 62(63-65-66-68) for turn. Work in pat as follows:

Row 1 - Right side: K 2(3-5-6-2), * sl 1, K 5, repeat from * across.

Row 2: P.
Repeat last 2 rows to 3(3-3-5-5) inches, end at side edge. Dec 1 at side edge on next row then at same edge every 2 inches 11(11-11-10-10) times more. Work on the 50(51-53-55-57) sts to match back to armhole, end at side edge. Width across front including facing is 12½(12¾-13¼-13¾-14¼) inches.

Armhole: Bind off 3 at side edge twice. Work 1 row. Dec 1 at same edge every row 3(3-3-5-6) times then every other row 1(1-2-1-1) times. Work 6(6-6-6-7) rows on the 40(41-42-43-44) sts.

Dart: Starting at front edge, P 30, place a marker, P to end.

Row 1: Inc 1 in first st, work to 2 sts before marker, sl 1, K 1, psso, sl marker, work to end. Having 1 less st in the "K" panel before the dart, work 5 rows. Repeat last 6 rows 3 times more, then repeat Row 1 once more, end at front edge.

Neck: Bind off 15(16-16-17-17) at beg of next row. Bind off 4 at same edge twice, end at armhole edge, 17(17-18-18-19) rem. Repeat Row 1 of Dart once more. Remove marker. Work on the 17(17-18-18-19) sts to match back armhole, end at armhole edge.

Shoulder: Bind off 6 at armhole edge 2(2-3-3-2) times, then on Sizes 10(12-18) Only bind off 5(5-7) sts at same edge once. Place markers for 4 buttons with first marker ½ inch below neck and 4th about 15 inches above hemline.

Right Front: Work same as left front through hemline dec. K the 51(52-54-55-57) sts for turn, cast on 11 at end for front edge and facing. Work on the 62(63-65-66-68) sts:

Row 1 - Right side: * K 5, sl 1, repeat from * to last 2(3-5-6-2) sts, K to end.

Row 2: P. Repeating these 2 rows for pat, work to correspond to left front to dart, with buttonholes opposite markers as follows: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, bind off next 2, work 2 more sts, bind off next 2, work to end. Next row cast on 2 sts over each buttonhole. To Start Dart: Starting at armhole edge P 10(11-12-13-14), place a marker, P 30.

Row 1: Work to marker, K 2 tog, work to last st, inc 1 in last st. Continue to shape dart and front to correspond to left front.

Sleeves: With Size 5 needles and 1  strand of A - cast on 48(51-51-54-54). K 1 row and P 1 row for 2 inches, end with a P row. Join in 2nd strand of A, change to Size 8 needles and dec as follows: K 3(2-2-1-1), * K 2 tog, K 3, repeat from * to last 5(4-4-3-3), K 2 tog, K to end. K the 39(41-41-43-43) sts for turn. Work in pat as follows:

Row 1: K 1(2-2-3-3), sl 1, * K 5, sl 1, repeat from * to last 1(2-2-3-3) sts, K to end.

Row 2: P. Repeat last 2 rows to 2 inches above turn, end with a P row. Working added sts in pat, inc 1 each side on next row, every 8th row 2(2-7-7-10) times then on Sizes 10(12-14-16) Only every 10th row 6(6-2-2) times. Work on the 57(59-61-63-65) sts to 17 inches above turn, end with a P row. Width across sleeve is 14¼(14¾-15¼-15¾-16¼) inches.

Sleeve Cap: Bind off 3 at beg of next 4 rows. Dec 1 each side every other row until 25 rem, end with a P row. Bind off 2 at beg of next 6 rows. Bind off 13.

Collar: With Size 8 needles and 2 strands of A - cast on 83(89-89-95-95).

Row 1: K 5, * sl 1, K 5, repeat from * across.
Row 2: P.
Repeat last 2 rows for 2 inches, end with Row 2. Dec as follows: K 5, sl 1, * K 5, sl 1, K 2 tog, K 3, sl 1, repeat from * to last 5(11-11-5-5) sts, work to end. Work 5 rows on the 77(83-83-88-88) sts. Next row K 5, sl 1, K 3, K 2 tog, * sl 1, K 4, sl 1, K 3, K 2 tog, repeat from * to last 11(6-6-11-11), work to end. Work on the 71(76-76-81-81) sts to 5 inches above start. Bind off for neck edge. With Size 5 needles, 1 strand of A and wrong side facing, pick up and K 25 along narrow edge. K 1 row and P 1 row for 1 inch for facing. Bind off loosely. Work other side in same way. If coat is to be lined, use knitted pieces for pattern, allowing 1 inch for seams, for pleat at center back and for ease at elbows.
Sew shoulder seams. Turn in front facing on first sl st and sew in place. Leaving 1 pat free at each front, sew collar to neck. Sew in sleeves. Seam sides and sleeves. Turn up hems and sew in place. With 2 strands of A - crochet 1 row of sc on front edges and collar.

SHORTS

Note: Work with 1 strand of A.

Gauge: Pat Stitch on Size 5 needles - 11 sts to 2 inches; 8 rows to 1 inch.

Length is 19½(19¾-20-20¼-20½) inches from start to waistline. To lengthen or shorten, make adjustment before crotch.

Right Leg: With Size 5 needles and A - cast on 125(127-129-133-137). Work in pat as follows:

Row 1 - Right side: K 2(3-4-3-5), sl 1, * K 5, sl 1, repeat from * to last 2(3-4-3-5), K to end.

Row 2: P.
Repeat last 2 rows for pat, working 9½ inches from start, end with Row 2. Mark beg of next row for front and start of crotch.

Crotch: Bind off 2 at beg of next row for front edge, work to end. Bind off 6 at beg of next row, work to end. Dec 1 each side every row 4(4-4-3-3) times. Dec 1 at back edge only every row 6(4-2-2-2) times, then at same edge every 4th(4th-6th-6th-8th) row 5(5-4-4-3) times more. Work on the 98(102-107-113-118) sts to 5 inches above marker. Width across hip is 17¾(18½-19½-20½-21½) inches. Dec 1 each side on next row then every 6th row 7 times, then On Sizes 14(16-18) Only dec 1 each side ever other row 1(3-4) times more. Work on the 82(86-89-91-94) sts to 11(11¼-11½-11¾-12) inches above marker. Bind off.

Left Leg: Work same as Right Leg to crotch, end with Row 1. Mark end of last row for front seam. Bind off 2 at beg of next row for front edge, work to end. Bind off 6 at beg of next row for back edge. Finish to correspond to Right Leg. Sew leg seams. Sew center front and center back seams. With A - crochet 2 rows of sc around waistline. Fasten off. On wrong side, make a casing for elastic cut to fit.

PULLOVER

Note: Work with 1 strand of B.

Gauge: Stockinette Stitch on Size 5 needles - 5 sts to 1 inch; 7 rows to 1 inch.

Back: With Size 4 needles and B - cast on 80(84-88-92-96).

Row 1 - Right side: K 1, * P 2, K 2, repeat from * across end P 2, K 1.

Row 2: P 1, * K 2, P 2, repeat from * across, end K 2, P 1. Repeat last 2 rows 3 times more, inc'ing 6(6-8-8-10) evenly across last row. Change to Size 5 needles. Starting with a K row work in St St on the 86(90-96-100-106) sts to 13½ inches above start, end with a P row. Width across back is 17¼(18-19-20-21) inches.

Armholes: Bind off 5 at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 each side every row 1(1-3-3-5) times then every other row until 66(68-70-72-74) rem. Work until armhole measures 6¾(7-7¼-7½-7¾) inches above underarm, end with a P row. Width across shoulders is 13¼(13½-14-14¼-14¾) inches.

Shoulders: Bind off 7 at beg of next 4(6-6-4-4) rows then On Sizes 10(16-18) Only bind off 6(8-8) at beg of next 2 rows. Sl rem'ing 26(26-28-28-30) to a holder for neck.

Front: Work same as back to 4¾(5-5¼-5½-5¾) inches above underarm, end with a K row.

Neck: P 26(27-27-28-28) and sl them to a holder, P center 14(14-16-16-18) and sl them to 2nd holder for neck, P to end. Bind off 2 at neck twice then dec 1 at same edge every other row twice. Work on the 20(21-21-22-22) sts to match back armhole, end at armhole edge.

Shoulder: Bind off 7 at armhole 2(3-3-2-2) times then On Sizes 10(16-18) Only bind off 6(8-8) at same edge once. Starting at neck, work other side to correspond.

Sleeves: With Size 4 needles and B - cast on 40(40-44-44-44). Work 14 rows in ribbing as on back, inc'ing 4(6-4- 6-8) evenly spaced across last row. Change to Size 5 needles. Starting with a K row work in St St on the 44(46-48-50-52) sts. Inc 1 each side every 8th row 9 times. Work on the 62(64-66-68-70) sts to 16 inches above start, end with a P row. Width across sleeve is 12½(12¾-13¼-13¾-14) inches.

Sleeve Cap: Bind off 5 at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 each side every row 3 times then every other row until 26 rem. Bind off 2 at beg of next 6 rows. Bind off rem'ing 14 sts. Sew right shoulder seam.

Turtleneck: With Size 4 needles, right side facing, pick up and K 76(76-80-80-84) around neck including holders. K 2 and P 2 in ribbing for 4½ inches. Bind off in ribbing. Sew left shoulder seam joining collar. Sew sleeves in place. Sew side and sleeve seams.

HELMET

Flaps: Make 2. With Size 5 needles and B - cast on 14.

Row 1 - Right side: P 2, * K 2, P 2, repeat from * across.
Row 2: K 2, * P 2, K 2, repeat from * across.
Repeat these 2 rows 10 times. Working added sts in ribbing, inc 1 each side on next row then every 4th row 3 times more. Work 1 row. Break off yarn and sl sts to a holder. Cast on 6 for back, then on right side, work across 1 flap, cast on 34 for front, work across other flap, cast on 6 for back. Starting with P 2 sts, work 7 rows in ribbing on the 90 sts as on flaps. Starting with a K row work in St St to 4 inches above ribbing, end with a P row. Next row dec 8 evenly across. P 1 row. Repeat last 2 rows, careful not to dec over dec's, until 10 rem. Break off leaving a 15-inch end. Draw through sts and sew back seam.
With Size 0 crochet hook and 2 strands of B - on right side, crochet 1 row of sc around edges, making a ch-5 button loop on right flap only. Fasten off.
