MATERIALS – Fleisher's Melbourne Zephyr; or Bear Brand or Bucilla Angel Zephyr, 5 skeins.
1 pair Fleisher's or Bucilla 14-inch White Knitting Needles, Size 3.
1 Fleisher's or Bucilla Steel Crochet Hook, Size 4.
10 Round Metal Buttons about ¾ inch diameter.

IMPORTANT – Check your gauge first. These directions apply only when Fleisher's, Bear Brand or Bucilla Yarns are used as recommended.

GAUGE: 7 sts = 1 in. 21 rows = 2 ins.

MEASUREMENTS FOR FINISHED GARMENT

Width across back at lower edge and underarm 16 ins. Width across back at shoulders 12 ¾ ins. Width of each front at lower edge and underarm 10 ½ ins. Length from lower edge to back neck edge 23 ins. Sleeves-Width below underarm 12 ¾ ins.

Pattern is a multiple of 4 plus 1.

BACK-Cast on 113 sts for lower edge.

First row (right side)-P 1, * k 2, p 2; repeat from * across row. 2nd row-K 1, * p 2, k 2; repeat from * across row.

Repeat these 2 rows for pattern. Work even in pattern for 15 ins.

ARMHOLES-Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of the next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 7 times (89 sts). Work even until 6 ½ ins. above underarm.

SHOULDERS-Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of the next 14 rows. Bind off 33 sts.

LEFT FRONT-Cast on 73 sts. Work pattern as for back until same length as back to underarm, ending with 2nd pattern row.

ARMHOLE-Bind off 9 sts at beginning of next row for underarm.

Decrease 1 st at armhole edge every 2nd row 7 times (57 sts). Work even until 6 ins. above underarm, ending at front edge.

NECK AND SHOULDER SHAPING-Bind off 20 sts at beginning of next row for neck edge. Decrease 1 st at neck edge every row 9 times (28 sts). Shape shoulder as for back at beginning of rows worked from armhole edge. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT-Cast on 73 sts. Work as for left front for 16 rows.

Next row-Work pattern for 3 sts, bind off next 3 sts for buttonhole, work to end. Next row-Cast on 3 sts over bound-off sts. Repeat buttonhole every 2 ins. 9 times (20 rows between buttonholes), shaping armhole as for left front at beginning of a row worked from wrong side. There will be about 4 rows above 10th buttonhole. Shape neck and shoulder as for left front, binding off for neck from right side of work and for shoulder from wrong side of work.

SLEEVES-Cast on 81 sts for lower edge. Work pattern even for 2 ½ ins. Increase 1 st each side of next row and repeat increases every ½ in. 3 times being careful to carry out pattern (89 sts). Work even until 5 ins. from lower edge. Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 4 times; every 6th row 8 times (51 sts). Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of the next 6 rows. Bind off 33 sts.

POCKETS-Cast on 41 sts. Work pattern for 6 ¼ ins. Bind off as for pattern.

COLLAR-Cast on 105 sts. Work pattern even for 5 rows. Decrease 1 st each side of next row and repeat decreases every 4th row 3 times (97 sts). Work 4 rows even. Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of the next 8 rows. Bind off 33 sts.

FINISHING-Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with sleeve seam at center underarm, holding in fullness at top. Sew bound off edge of collar to neck edge, with center of collar at center back of neck and short ends 1 ½ ins. from front edges. Be careful not to stretch collar more than 14 inches. Working loosely from right side, work a row of slip st around 4 sides of each pocket working 3 slip sts at each corner. Work a row of slip st on lower edge of each sleeve from right side of pattern. Join yarn at lower edge of right front. Working from right side, work 1 row slip st on right front to neck edge (21 ins), continue slip st on 1 ½ ins. across bound-off sts at neck edge; around edges of collar increasing at corners; finish left side to correspond to right side. Fasten off. Working from wrong side of sweater, work a row of slip st loosely around lower edge of sweater. Steam lightly, pinning out lower edge underarm and sleeves to given measurements, allowing waistline to rib in.

Do not steam at waistline.

Turn up lower edge of sleeves 1 ½ ins. and tack in place. Place pockets 2 ½ ins. from front edges and 1 in. from lower edge matching stripes. Sew ribbon across shoulders and back of neck. Sew buttons on left front. Use shoulder pads No. 6, see patternbook page.
