MATERIAL:
  4 skeins Baby Yarn  3 ply (1 oz. skein) 
  1 pair knitting  needles each No. 2 and No. 3 
  5 buttons 
GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch
BACK: 
  Cast on 80 (86)  sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Incr. 4 sts. at  even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 3 needles and stock. st.  With 84 (90) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 7 (8) inch. or any  des. length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 4  (5) sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (72 (76) sts. left). Work even  for 5 (5½) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg.  of the next 6 (4) rows 8 (13) sts., rem. 24 sts. bind off for neck. 
FRONT:
  Cast on 49 (51)  sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch., keeping the 7  center front sts. in seed st. for buttonhole border throughout the entire  front. Incr. 4 (5) sts. across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 3 needles and  pattern: 
  1st row: K20 (23), P2, K6,  P2, K3, P2, K6, P2, K3, work 7 sts. seed st. for border. 
  2nd row: work 7 sts. seed  st. for border, P3, K2, P6, K2, P3, K2, P6, K2, P20 (23) Repeat 1st and 2nd row  once more. 
  5th row: K20 (23), * P2,  slip the next 3 sts. to an extra needle and hold in front of work, K next 3  sts., K the 3 sts. from extra needle (a cable made), P2, K3, repeat from * once  more and work 7 sts. seed st. for border 
  6th row: like 2nd row. 
  Cont. to work this  way cabling the K6 sts. every 6th row on right side. 
  With 53 (56) sts.  work even until the entire piece measures like Back to underarm. Bind off for  armhole at the beg. of the next row at seam edge 6 (7) sts. and at the beg. of  the next 2 rows at same edge 2 sts. (43 (45) sts. left). Work even for 3½ (4) inch.  from the first binding off. Bind off for neck 11 sts. at center edge and then  always 2 sts. at neck edge until 24 (26) sts. are left over. Work as high as  Back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 8 (13) sts. 3 (2) times. Work  the other front to correspond reversing cable st. pattern. 1st row: work  7 sts. seed st. for border, K3, P2, K6, P2, K3, P2, K6, P2, K20 (23). Make 5  buttonholes evenly spaced apart in front border, starting first buttonhole  after ½ inch. (To make a buttonhole, work 3 sts. in seed st., bind off 2 sts.  and work to end of row. On next row, cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts.) 
SLEEVE:
  Cast on 46 (48)  sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Incr. 4 sts. at  even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 3 needles and pattern:  K20 (21), P2, K6, P2, K20 (21), cable the K6 sts. as on sweater every 6th row on  right side. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every 6th row until there  are 64 (70) sts. on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 8 (9) inch.  or any des. length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 3 sts. Decr.  1 st. at the beg. of each row until cap measures 2 (2½) inch. Decr. 1 st. at  the beg. and end of every 4th row 2 (3) times. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of  the next 6 rows. Bind off rem. sts. Work other sleeve to correspond. 
FINISHING:
Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Neckband: Right side facing you, pick up with No. 2 needles 70 (76) sts. around the neck and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 7 rows. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Sew buttons in place and block to size.
