MATERIAL:
Jacket: 4 (5-6) skeins Light Weight Knitting Worsted (1 oz. skein), or
2 (3-4) skeins Germantown (2 oz. skein)
Hat: 1 (1-1) skein Light Weight Knitting Worsted (1 oz. skein), or
or
1 skein Germantown (2 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 3 and No. 5
6 buttons
Ribbon for trimming

GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch

PATTERN:
1st to 4th row incl.: stock. st.
5th to 8th row incl.: seed st.

BACK:
Cast on 56 (60-64) sts. with No. 3 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Incr. 3 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 5 needles and pattern. With 59 (63-67) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 6½ (7-7½) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 3 (3-4) sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (49 (53-55) sts. left). Work even for 4¾ (5-5½) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 6 (4-6) rows 5 (8-6) sts., rem. 19 (21-19) sts. bind off for neck.

FRONT:
Cast on 33 (35-37) sts. with No. 3 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. keeping the 5 center front sts. in seed st. for border. Incr. 3 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 5 needles and pattern. With 36 (38-40) sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back to underarm. Bind off at underarm edge 3 (3-4) sts. and at the beg. of the next 2 rows at same edge 2 sts. (29 (31-32) sts. left). Work even for 3½ (3¾-4) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for neck 8 (9-10) sts. at center edge and then always 2 sts. at neck edge until 15 (16-18) sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 5 (8-6) sts. 3 (2-3) times. Work the other Front to correspond and work 6 buttonholes in front border evenly spaced apart, starting first buttonhole after ½ inch and placing last one 4 rows below neck edge. (To make a buttonhole: work 2 sts., bind off 2 sts., work to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts. of previous row.)

SLEEVE:
Cast on 32 (34-36) sts. with No. 3 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Incr. 3 sts. (all sizes) at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 5 needles and pattern. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every 6th row until 41 (45-49) sts. are on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 7½ (8½-9½) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 3 (3-4) sts. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until cap measures 2 (2¼-2½) inch. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row twice. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of the next 4 rows. Bind off rem. sts. Work the other sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING:
Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Collar: Wrong side facing you pick up with No. 3 needles 59 (61-63) sts. around the neck and work in pattern, keeping the first and last 3 sts. on needle in seed st. for border. Incr. 1 st. each end of every 3rd row inside the 3 border sts. until collar is 2½ (2½-2¾) inch. wide. Work 3 rows seed st. and bind off loosely in pattern. Crochet 1 row s.c. around collar and down each side of front. Sew buttons in place and block to size.

HAT:
With No. 3 needles cast on 59 (63-67) sts. and work in seed st. for 6 rows. Change to No. 5 needles and pattern. Work even until piece measures 4¼ (4½-4¾) inch. from beg. Incr. 1 st. before and after the center st. every other row (on right side) 6 times. Bind off. Sew up back seam. Neckband: Right side facing you pick up with No. 3 needles 70 (72-76) sts. around the bottom of hat and K1, P1 for 3 rows. 4th row: * K1, P1, y.o., K2 tog., repeat from * across row. 5th & 6th row: work ribbing K1, P1. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Block to size. Pull ribbon through beading row.
