Sizes 10-10½ (11-11½, 12-12½).

With main color and No. 2 needles, cast on 56 sts (60 sts, 64 sts).

Divide sts on 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Change to No. 1 needles and work around tightly in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2 inches for Slack-Length Socks or for 5 inches for Regulation-Length Socks, then knit 1 rnd, decreasing evenly around to 52 sts (54 sts, 56 sts).

Change to No. 2 needles and work in stockinette st (knit each rnd) for 7 rnds. Work 2 rnds of light contrasting color, 4 rnds of dark contrasting color, 2 rnds of light contrasting color and 8 rnds of main color. Repeat the last 16 rnds for stripe pattern until piece measures in all, ending with the 4th rnd of main color, 5½ inches for Slack-Length Socks, or 11½ inches for Regulation-Length Socks. Break off contrasting colors. With 4th needle, knit from 1st needle 13 sts (14 sts, 14 sts).

Slip from 3rd needle onto other end of 4th needle the last 13 sts (13 sts, 14 sts) of previous rnd (4th needle is now 1st needle).

Divide between 2nd and 3rd needles for instep the remaining 26 sts (27 sts, 28 sts) and knit across those sts.

Next rnd: Drop sock yarn, then with a different color thread (for heel marker) knit across 1st needle. Drop different color thread, go back and pick up sock yarn and, starting with 1st needle, knit around in stripe pattern (always change color at center of 1st, or sole, needle) until piece measures from heel marker 6½" (7½", 8½"). Break off contrasting colors.

With main color shape toe as follows: 1st rnd: On 1st needle, k 2 together, knit across to last 2 sts, then k 2 together. On 2nd needle, k 2 together, then knit to end. On 3rd needle, knit across to last 2 sts, then k 2 together. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Knit around. Repeat these 3 rnds alternately 5 more times, then knit only 1 rnd straight between decrease rnds until there remain 20 sts (22 sts, 24 sts).

Weave sts together; or bind off, fold so that decreases are at sides, and sew.

HEEL … Pull out heel marker, pick up sole sts on 1st needle. There are on 1st needle 26 sts (27 sts, 28 sts).

Divide remaining 25 sts (26 sts, 27 sts) between 2nd and 3rd needles.

Attach main color at beginning of 1st needle and knit 1 rnd, picking up 2 sts between 1st and 2nd needles (1 st on each needle) and 2 sts between 3rd and 1st needles in same way. There are on needles 55 sts (57 sts, 59 sts).

Work 2 rnds straight, then shape heel as follows: 1st rnd: On 1st needle, k 2 together, knit to last 2 sts, then k 2 together. On 2nd needle, k 2 together, then knit to end. On 3rd needle, knit to last 2 sts, then k 2 together. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Knit around. Repeat these 3 rnds alternately 4 more times, then knit 1 rnd straight between decreases until there remain 23 sts (25 sts, 27 sts).

Weave sts together; or bind off, fold so that decreases are at sides, and sew.
