Hooded Coat Pattern #735-17

These directions are for Size 10 to 12. Changes for Sizes 14 to 16 and 18 to 20 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Columbia-Minerva Calibar (2 oz skein) - 24(26-28) skeins

OR

Columbia-Minerva Nylon and Wool Calibrette (2 oz skein) - 21(23-24) skeins

Knitting Needles: 1 pair "Boye" Size 10 - 14 inch
Gauge: 5 sts to 1 ½ inches; 6 rows to 1 inch
1 "Boye" Aluminum Crochet Hook "I" (Size 7 or 8)

PATTERN STITCH: Row 1: P. Row 2: P. Row 3: K. Row 4: K. Repeat these 4 rows for pat.

BACK: Starting at lower edge, cast on 72(78-84) sts. Work in pat until work measures 18”(18 ½”-19”), or desired length from start to underarm. To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 4 times - 56(62-68) sts on needle. When armholes measure 9”(9 ½”-10”), measured straight from bound-off sts at underarm, To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 9(10-11) sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off rem 20(22-24) sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Cast on 40(44-48) sts. Work in pat. When work measures same as Back to underarm, To Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times - 33(37-41) sts on needle. When armhole measures 3 ½ inches, measured straight from bound-off sts at underarm, work dart as follows: (Right side of work) Work 14(18-22) sts, work 2 sts tog, work to end of row. Repeat this dec'ing row every 6th row 4(4-5) times more, having 1 st less at beg of row AND AT THE SAME TIME when front edge measures 24”(25”-25 ¾”) from start, To Shape Neck: Bind off 5(6-7) sts at front edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every row 3 times, then every other row 2(3-3) times more. When armhole measures same as at Back, To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 9(10-11) sts at armhole edge every other row 2 times. Place markers for 6 buttons at front edge, having first marker about 4 inches from start and 6th marker ¾ inch below neck edge.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with Left Front, reversing shaping and working dart and buttonholes to correspond with markers as follows: Buttonholes: (Right side of work) Work 4 sts, bind off next 4 sts, work to end of row. Next row cast on 4 sts over the bound-off sts. Dart: (Right side of work) Work 17 sts, work 2 sts tog, work to end of row.

SLEEVES: Cast on 34(38-42) sts. Work in pat, inc'ing 1 st each side every 12th row 7 times - 48(52-56) sts on needle. When work measures 16”(16 ½”-17”), or desired length from start to underarm, To Shape Cap of Sleeve: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 15 times, then every 4th row 1(2-3) times. Work 4 more rows and bind off rem 8(10-12) sts.

LEFT FRONT FACING: Cast on 12 sts. Work in St St. When work measures 21”(22”-23”) from start, inc 1 st at end of K row (inside edge), then inc 1 st at same edge every 6th row 4(5-5) times more AND AT THE SAME TIME when outside edge measures same as front edge of Coat from start to neck edge, bind off 5(6-7) sts at outside edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every row 3 times, then every other row 2(3-3) times. When work measures same as Left Front to shoulder, bind off rem 7(6-5) sts. Place markers for 6 buttons to correspond with Left Front.

RIGHT FRONT FACING: Work to correspond with Left Front Facing, having incs and decs at opposite sides and working buttonholes to correspond with markers as follows: (Right side of work) Work to within last 8 sts, bind off next 4 sts, K 4. On next row cast on 4 sts over the bound-off sts.

HOOD: Starting at outside edge, cast on 96 (100-100) sts. Work in pat, dec'ing 1 st each side on 6th(6th-14th) row from start, then every 4th row 6(6-4) times more - 82(86-90) sts on needle. On 32nd(34th-36th) row from start, work 2 sts tog, work across 28(30-32) sts, place marker on needle, work across 11 sts, place marker on needle, work across 11 sts, place marker on needle, work across 28(30-32) sts, work 2 sts tog. Continue to dec 1 st each side every other row 9 times more AND AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st before first marker, at each side of center marker and after 3rd marker, every 4th row 5 times. When 42(46-50) sts rem, bind off. Fold bound-off edge in half and sew tog.

POCKETS: (Make 2) Cast on 30 sts. Work in pat for 8 inches. Bind off. Work 1 row of sc across one side edge of Pocket.

Sew shoulder seams. Sew Sleeves in place. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew facings in place, working around buttonholes. Turn under cast-on edges of Coat and Sleeves and sew to first P row for hem. Sew dec edge of Hood to neck edge, starting and ending about 1 inch from front edges. With sc row as wrong side of Pocket, sew one Pocket to each Front, starting at side edge and first rib of lower edge.

TO MAKE BUTTONS: With Crochet Hook work over ring in sc, do not break yarn. Turn sts toward center of ring and draw sts tog, working back and forth, place matching button at center and sew to garment.
