MATERIALS
BERNAT Boucle de Laine—16(17-18) balls M C; 1 ball C C
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1 24-inch circular needle No. 2 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 5
1 slide fastener
1 yd 1 inch elastic
1 yd 1 inch ribbon
1 belt buckle
1  pair shoulder pads

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch

SKIRT

NOTE: Any changes in length of skirt are made before first dec round.

Using circular needle and M C, cast on 624(650-676) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts, Round 1: * K 11, P 2, repeat from * to end of round. Round 2: * K 5, sl 1, K 5, P 2, repeat from * to end of round. Repeat these 2 rounds un­til piece measures 7(7-9) inches. ** FIRST DEC ROUND: Dec 1 st by K 2 tog through the back of 2 sts before sl st of first K panel and EVERY SECOND K panel to end of round—24(25-26) sts dec. Following pattern, work even on 600(624-650) sts for 1½ inches. SECOND DEC ROUND: Dec 1 st by K 2 tog through the back of 2 sts before sl st of second K panel and EVERY SECOND K panel thereafter to end of round—24(25-26) sts dec. Following pattern, work even for 1½ inches. THIRD DEC ROUND: Dec 1 st by K 2 tog through the front of 2 sts after sl st of first panel and EVERY SECOND K panel thereafter to end of round. Following pattern, work even for 1½ inches. FOURTH DEC ROUND: Dec 1 st by K 2 sts tog through the front of 2 sts after sl st of second panel and EVERY SECOND K panel thereafter to end of round. Work even for 1½ inches. Repeat from ** until piece meas­ures 32(32½-33) inches. Bind off remaining 216(225-260) sts.

BLOUSE

NOTE: Each dot is made with a separate strand of yarn 8 inches long. Be sure to twist yarns when changing colors.

LEFT BACK: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 54(58-62) sts. Work in stockinette st for ¾ inch, ending with a K row. On the next row P 2(4-6) sts, put a marker on needle; P 51 sts; put a marker on needle, P remaining 1(3-5) sts. Work in stockinette st, following chart on the sts between markers and keeping all other sts in M C, inc 1 st at arm edge every ¾ inch 10 times. Work even on 64(68-72) sts until piece measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 7(8-9) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 5 times. Work even on 52(55-58) sts until armhole measures 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 11(12-13) sts 3 times. Bind off remaining 19 sts.

RIGHT BACK: Work to correspond with left back, being sure to reverse shaping and pattern.

FRONT: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 117(125-133) sts. Work in stockinette st for ¾ inch, ending with a K row. On the next row P 1(5-1) sts, put a marker on needle; P 115(115-131), put a marker on needle; P remaining 1(5-1) sts. Work in stockinette st, following chart on sts between markers and keeping all other sts in M C, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 10 times. Work even on 137(145-153) sts until piece measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 10(10-11) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 6(7-7) times. Work even on 105(111-117) sts until armholes measure 5¾(6-6¼) inches. SHAPE NECK: Work 37(40-43) sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off center 31 sts; work remaining 37(40-43) sts. Work­ing on both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 4 times. Work even on 33(36-39) sts of each side until armholes measure 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 11(12-13) sts 3 times.

SLEEVES: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 89(95-101) sts. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a K row. P the next 2 rows to form cuff line. Continue in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a K row. On the next row P 3(6-1) sts, put a marker on needle; P 83(83-99) sts, put a marker on needle; P remaining 3(6-1) sts. Work in stockinette st, following chart on sts between markers and keeping all other sts in M C, inc 1 st each end of needle every ½ inch 5 times. Work even on 99(105-111) sts until piece measures 4(4½-4½) inches above hemline. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 10(10-11) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4¼(4½-4¾) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR: Cast on 112(114-116) sts. Work in stockinette st for 4 rows. On the next row work 55(56-57) sts and put these sts on a holder; bind off next 2 sts; work remaining 55(56-57) sts. Work on these 55(56-57) sts, inc 1 st each end of needle every other row until piece measures 1½ inches. Bind off. Slip sts from holder onto needles and work to correspond with other side.

BELT: Make a chain 30(32-34) inches long. Work back and forth in s c until piece measures 1 inch. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Using M C, work 2 rows s c around bottom and top edges of skirt. Work a beading on inside top of skirt. Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Using M C, work 2 rows s c on sleeve edges. Turn up cuffs and tack in place. Sew collar in place. Work 2 rows s c around collar and back opening edges. Block skirt, blouse and belt. Close back opening with slide fastener. Sew blouse and skirt tog. Run elastic, cut to waist measurement, through beading and sew ends tog. Sew in shoulder pads. Line belt with grosgrain ribbon. Using M C, buttonhole st over buckle and sew to one end of belt. Turn down other end to form a point.
