MATERIALS
BERNAT Boucle de Laine—16(16-17) balls Main Color (M C)
BERNAT Bob-O-Laine—3 cards Contrasting Color (C C)
1 29 inch circular knitting needle No. 2 (standard)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 1 and 2 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 4
1 pair shoulder pads
1 slide fastener 6 inch length for back opening
1 slide fastener 10 inch length for dress placket
1 yard ¼ inch elastic
1 yard 1 inch grosgrain ribbon
Bone ring

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch

SKIRT

NOTE: Any changes in length of skirt are made before first dec round.

Using M C and No. 2 circular needle, cast on 532(566-586) sts. Join being careful not to twist sts. Round 1: * P 22(21-22), K 5 *, repeat between *'s 7(8-8) times more, P 22(21-22), K 28, repeat between *'s 8(9-9) times, P 22(21-22), K 28. Repeat Round 1 for 6½(9-9) inches. On the next round dec 18(20-20) sts by P 2 tog in center of every P panel. Repeat this dec round every 1½ inches until piece measures 26(27—27) inches and there are 8(8-9) P sts in each P panel—280(306-326) sts. SIDE OPENING: Starting at the beg of a round, work in pattern across 56(63-68) sts, turn. Now work back and forth, being sure to follow pattern as established until piece measures 30(31-29) inches. ON SIZE 18 ONLY, when piece measures 29 inches, dec 20 sts in one round in same manner as before. There will now be 8 sts in each P panel. Work even until piece measures 32 inches. ON ALL SIZES, P 2 sts tog in each P panel 3 times—226(246-246) sts. Change to No. 1 straight needles and K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 1 inch. Bind off.

BLOUSE

PATTERN STITCH
Row 1: P 0(4-8), * K 5, P 8 *, repeat between *'s 3 times more, K 28, repeat between *'s 4 times, P 0(4-8).
Row 2: K 0(4-8), * P 5, K 8 *, repeat between *'s 3 times more, P 28, repeat between *'s 4 times, K 0(4-8).
Repeat these 2 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK: Using M C and No. 2 straight needles, cast on 132(140-148) sts. Work even in pattern st until piece meas­ures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: Discontinue pattern st and working in stockinette st, at the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 7(8-9) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 7 times. Work even on 104(110-116) sts until armholes measure 1¼(1½-1¾)inches. BACK OPENING: Work across 52(55-58) sts; join another ball of yarn and work to end of row. Work even on both sides at once until armholes measure 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 11(12-13) sts 3 times. Bind off remaining 19 sts of each side.

FRONT: Work in same manner as back, omitting back open­ing, until armholes measure 6(6¼-6½) inches. SHAPE NECK: Work across 37(40-43) sts; bind off center 30 sts; join another ball of yarn and work last 37(40-43) sts. Work­ing both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 4 times. Work even on 33(36-39) sts of each shoulder until armholes measure 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 11(12-13) sts 3 times.

SLEEVES: Using M C and No. 2 straight needles, cast on 90(94-98) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 5 times. Work even on 100(104-108) sts until piece measures 4½ inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 7(8-9) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4¼(4½-4¾) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

BELT: Using C C and No. 2 straight needles, cast on 240(256-272) sts. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch. Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder, sleeve and right underarm seams. Sew left underarm seam for 3(3-3½) inches below armhole. Set in sleeves. Using M C, work 1 row s c around bottom of skirt; 2 rows s c around back and side openings. Work border around neck and edge of sleeves as follows: Using M C, work 1 row s c; using C C, work 1 row slip st; using M C, work 1 row slip st. Block skirt and blouse. Sew skirt to blouse. Make beading on inside waistline and run elastic, cut to waist measurement, through this beading. Embroider arrow heads on skirt and blouse as shown. Sew slide fasteners in side and back openings. Using C C, work 2 rows s c around belt. Using M C, cover ring for buckle. Block belt and face with grosgrain ribbon. Sew in shoulder pads.
