MATERIALS
BERNAT Boucle de Laine—12(13-14) balls Main Color (M C); 5(5-6) balls Contrasting Color (C C)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 4
2 yds 1 inch grosgrain ribbon to match M C
1 slide fastener 7 inch length
Hooks and eyes

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch

SKIRT

FRONT: Using M C, cast on 320(328-336) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 30(31-31) inches or 1 inch less than desired length, ending with a P row. On the next row K 2 tog across entire row. Bind off all sts.

BACK: Work in same manner as front.

WAISTBAND: Using M C, cast on 212(224-240) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch. Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew front and back tog, leaving a 7 inch opening on left side for slide fastener. Gather top of skirt and sew to waistband. Work 1 row s c around side opening. Block to size. Face waistband with grosgrain ribbon. Sew in slide fastener. Close belt with hooks and eyes.

BLOUSE

BACK: Using C C, cast on 104(112-120) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every ½ inch 13 times more. Work even on 132(140-148) sts until piece measures 9(9-9½) inches or desired length to underarm. ARMHOLES: Put a marker at each edge of work to indicate beg of armhole. Work even until armholes measure 7½(7¾-8) inches above markers. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 12(10-12) rows bind off 8(10-9) sts. Bind off remaining 36(40-40) sts.

FRONT: Work in same manner as back until armholes meas­ure ½ inch. FRONT OPENING: Work across 62(66-70) sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off center 8 sts; work last 62(66-70) sts. Work even on both sides at once until armholes measure 5½(5¾-6) inches, ending at front edge. SHAPE NECK: At front edge dec 1 st EVERY ROW 8 times and dec 1 st at same edge every other row 6(8-8) times. Work even on 48(50-54) sts of each side until arm- holes measure 7½(7¾-8) inches above markers. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 8(10-9) sts 6(5-6) times.

FRONT BANDS: Make 2. Using M C, cast on 40(44-48) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a P row. P the next 2 rows to form hemline. Continue in stockinette st for 1 inch more. Bind off all sts.

COLLAR: Using M C, cast on 104(108-112) sts. Work in same manner as front band.

ARMBANDS: Seam shoulders. Using M C and with right side facing you, pick up 120(124-128) sts around armholes between markers. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch. Bind off.

FINISHING: Fold front bands on hemline and sew to each side of front opening, with right band lapping over left band. Fold collar on hemline and sew to neck edge. Sew underarm seams. Work 2 rows s c on bottom of blouse. Block to size. Face armbands with ribbon.
