MATERIALS
BERNAT Boucle de Laine—20(21-22) balls Black; 1 ball each of Blue and Peony
BERNAT Beada—1 tube Gold
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1 circular knitting needle No. 2 (standard)
1 each steel crochet hooks Nos. 0 and 5
1 slide fastener for front
1 pair shoulder pads
1 yd elastic

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch

SKIRT

NOTE: Any changes in the length of skirt are made before first dec round.

Using circular needle, cast on 540(560-580) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. K round and round until piece measures 5 inches. On the next round, * K 54 (56-58) sts, put a marker on needle, repeat from * to end of round—10 markers on needle. On the next round dec 1 st each side of each marker (20 sts dec) and repeat this dec round every 2 inches until piece measures 22(24-26) inches—360 sts. On the next round dec in same manner as before and repeat this dec round every 1 inch until piece measures 28(29-30) inches—220(240-260) sts. Work 1 inch even. On the next round dec 10 sts by dec 1 st each side of first marker and every other marker thereafter to end of round—210(230-250) sts. ON SIZE 14 ONLY, work 1 inch even and bind off all sts. ON SIZES 16 AND 18 ONLY, work ½ inch even. On the next round dec 10 sts by dec 1 st each side of second marker and every other marker thereafter to end of round—220(240) sts. Work ½ inch even. Bind off all sts.

JACKET

BACK PEPLUM: Using straight needles and Black, cast on 140(154-168) sts. Work in stockinette st for 2 rows. At the beg of each of the next 4 rows cast on 5 sts; at the beg of each of the next 20 rows cast on 6 sts—280(294-308) sts. With wrong side facing you, * P 40(42-44) sts, put a market- on needle, repeat from * ending P 40(42-44) sts—6 mark­ers on needle. ** On the next row K 2 tog, * K to 2 sts before next marker, dec 1 st each side of marker, repeat from * ending K to last 2 sts, K 2 tog—14 sts dec. P the next row, K the next row, P the next row. Repeat from ** until 112(112-126) sts remain. ON SIZE 14 ONLY, with right side facing you, K the next row, dec 8 sts at even intervals. ON SIZE 18 ONLY, with right side facing you, K the next row, dec 6 sts at even intervals. ON ALL SIZES, work even until side edge measures 4¼(4½-4¾) inches. Bind off remaining 104(112-120) sts.

BACK: Using straight needles and Black, cast on 104(112-120) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ½ inch 12 times. Work even on 128(136-144) sts until piece measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 7(8-9) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 5 times. Work even on 104(110-116) sts until armholes measure 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 10(8-6) rows bind off 7(9-13) sts. Bind off remaining 34(38-38) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Using straight needles and Black, cast on 52(57-61) sts. Work in stockinette st, casting on 4 sts at the beg of each P row 4 times, and AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at the beg of every other K row 12(13-13) times. Work even on 56(60-64) sts until side edge measures 4¼(4½-4¾) inches. On the next row inc 1 st at arm edge and repeat this inc every ½ inch 11 times more. Work even on 68(72-76) sts until arm edge measures 12¼(12½-13¼) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 10(10-11) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 6(7-7) times. Work even on 52(55-58) sts until armhole measures 2½(2¾-3) inches. SHAPE NECK: At front edge dec 1 st every 3rd row until 35(36-39) sts remain. Work even until armhole measures 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOUL­DER: At arm edge bind off 7(9-13) sts 5(4-3) times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with left front, being sure to reverse all shaping.

SLEEVES: Using straight needles and Black, cast on 60(64-68) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 2 inches. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every ¾ inch until there are 98(104-108) sts. Work even until piece measures 17½(18-18) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 8(9-9) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4¼(4½-4¾) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING: Using Black and No. 5 crochet hook, work 2 rows s c around bottom and top of skirt. Work a beading on inside top of skirt. Sew bound off edge of back peplum to bottom edge of back blouse. Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Using Black and No. 5 crochet hook, work 1 row s c around all edges of jacket and sleeves. Block skirt and jacket. Run elastic, cut to waist measure­ment, through beading and sew ends. PATTERN FOR BRAID TRIM: Using hook No. 0 and a strand each of Blue, Peony and Gold, make a chain long enough to fit around bottom, front and neck edges of jacket. Row 1: Ch 1, work 1 s c in each st to end of chain. Break yarn. Make 2 pieces in same manner to fit sleeve edges. Sew braid trim on jacket. Close front opening with slide fastener from bottom to start of neck shaping. Sew in shoulder pads. Re-block.
