MATERIALS
BERNAT Merlaine—7(7-8) skeins Main Color (M C); 1 skein Contrasting Color (C C)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1  steel crochet hook No. 2
2  buttons in C C

GAUGE: 7 sts = 1 inch; 10 rows = 1 inch

BACK: Using M C and No. 2 needles cast on 102(108-114) sts. Work in stockinette st, dec 1 st each end of needle every 7th row 5 times. Work even on 92(98-104) sts until piece measures 4 inches. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every 7th row 9(10-10) times more. Work even on 112(120-126) sts until piece measures 11(11½-11½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 10(12-12) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 7 times. Work even on 78(82-88) sts until armholes measure 8¼(8½-8¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 12(13-15) sts. Bind off remaining sts.

RIGHT FRONT: Using M C and No. 2 needles, cast on 56(60-64) sts. Work in stockinette st, dec 1 st at arm edge every 7th row 5 times, and AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st at front edge every 3rd row 11 times. Working even at arm edge, continue to inc 1 st at front edge every 3rd row twice more. On the next row inc 1 st at arm edge and re­peat this inc every 7th row 8 times more and AT THE SAME TIME, at front edge inc 1 st every 3rd row twice more; work 1 row even; on the next row, dec 1 st at front edge and repeat this dec every 10th row 5 times more—69(73-77) sts. Now following chart, at arm edge inc 1 st 1(2-2) times more and at front edge continue to dec 1 st every 10th row twice more; then dec 1 st at same edge every 3rd row until 11(15-15) rows of chart are completed. SHAPE ARMHOLE: Continuing to dec at front edge every 3rd row, at arm edge bind off 10(12-13) sts. Dec 1 st at arm edge every other row 7 times. When chart is com­pleted, continue to dec at front edge every 3rd row until 24(26-30) sts remain. Work even until armhole measures 8¼(8½-8¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 12(13-15) sts twice.

LEFT FRONT: Work to correspond with right front, being sure to reverse all shaping and placing of design.

FINISHING: Sew underarm and shoulder seams. Work 3 rows s c around armholes, neck and down fronts as follows: 1 row M C, 1 row C C, 1 row M C. Using M C, work 1 row s c around lower edge of vest. Block to size. Sew snappers at waistline and sew on buttons as shown in photograph.
