Seattle Skirt, Blouse & Jacket

MATERIALS
BERNAT Fleurette—31(32-32) skeins Gray; 4 skeins Brown; 2 skeins Turquoise
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1 24 inch circular needle No. 2 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 5
7 buttons
1  slide fastener
2  pair shoulder pads
1 belt buckle
1 yd 1 inch elastic
1 yd 1½ inch grosgrain ribbon

GAUGE: 7 sts = 1 inch; 10 rows = 1 inch

SKIRT

NOTE: Any changes in length of skirt are made before first dec round.

Using circular needle and Gray, cast on 480(490-500) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. K round and round until piece measures 2½(3-3½) inches. FIRST DEC ROUND: * K 46(47-48) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—10 sts dec. Work even for 1½ inches. SECOND DEC ROUND: * K 45(46-47) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round 10 sts dec. Continue to dec 10 sts in this manner every 1½ inches, having 1 st less between dec on each dec round, until piece measures 31½(32-32½) inches— 280(290-300) sts. On the next round K 3 sts tog 24(25- 26) times; K 28(30-32) sts (center front of skirt); K 3 sts tog 24(25-26) times; K 108(110-112) sts. K 2 rounds even. Bind off remaining 184(190-196) sts.

BLOUSE

BACK: Using straight needles and Gray, cast on 92(100-106) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 10 times. Work even on 112(120-126) sts until piece measures 7½(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SLEEVES: Put a marker at each end of work. On the next row inc 1 st at each end of needle and repeat this inc every ¾ inch until piece measures 4(4¼-4½) inches. BACK OPENING: Work across one half of sts; join another ball of yarn and work to end of row. Working on both sides at once, continue to inc 1 st at each arm edge every ¾ inch until there are 66(70-73) sts. Work even until sleeves measure 7¾(8-8¼) inches above markers. SHAPE SLEEVES AND SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 8(10-9) sts 6(5-6) times. Bind off remaining 18(20 19) sts of each side.

FRONT: Using straight needles and Gray, cast on 100(106-114) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 10 times. Work even on 120(126-134) sts until piece measures 7½(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SLEEVES: Put a marker at each end of work. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every ¾ inch until piece measures 5¾(6-6¼) inches above markers. SHAPE NECK: Work across 50(54-57) sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off center 36(36-38) sts; work remaining 50(54-57) sts. Working on both sides at once, continue to inc 1 st at each arm edge every ¾ inch and AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 4(5-4) times, until there are 48(50-54) sts on each side. Work even until sleeves measure 7¾(8-8¼) inches. SHAPE SLEEVES AND SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 8(10-9) sts 6(5-6) times.

COLLAR: Using straight needles and Gray, cast on 98(100-102) sts. Work in stockinette st for 4 rows. On the next row K 48(49-50) sts and put these sts on a holder; bind off next 2 sts; work remaining 48(49-50) sts. Work on these 48(49-50) sts, inc 1 st each end of needle every 3rd row until piece measures 2½ inches. Bind off. Slip sts from holder onto needles and work to correspond with other side.

BELT: Using Brown, make a 30(31-32) inch chain. Row 1: Work 1 s c in each st to end of chain, ch 2, turn. Row 2: Work 1 d c in each s c to end of row, ch 1, turn. Repeat these 2 rows for 1½ inches, ending with Row 1.

FINISHING: Using Gray, work 2 rows s c around bottom and top of skirt. Sew underarm and shoulder seams. Sew collar in place. Using Gray, work 2 rows s c around sleeve, collar and back opening edges. Sew blouse and skirt tog, being sure that fullness is at either side of center front. Work a beading on inside waistline. Block dress and belt. Close back opening with slide fastener. Run elastic, cut to waist measurement, through beading and sew ends tog. Face belt with grosgrain ribbon. Sew buckle to belt. Sew in shoulder pads.

JACKET

PATTERN STITCH FOR BACK: Work in stockinette st throughout, using colors as follows:
Rows 1 through 12: 18(20-22) Brown sts; * 4 Turquoise sts, 36(38-40) Brown sts, repeat from * ending 4 Turquoise sts, 18(20-22) Brown sts.
Rows 13 through 18: Work in Turquoise only.
Rows 19 through 30: Repeat Row 1.
Rows 31 through 60: 10(12-14) Gray sts, * 8 Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts, 8 Brown sts, 20(22-24) Gray sts, repeat from * ending 8 Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts, 8 Brown sts, 10(12-14) Gray sts.
Repeat these 60 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK: Using Brown, cast on 120(128-136) sts. Work in pattern st until piece measures approximately 8(8¼-8½) inches, ending with Row 18(20-22). SHAPE ARMHOLES: Still following pattern st, at the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6(7-7) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4 times. Work even on 100(106-114) sts until armholes measure 7½(7¾-8) inches. SHAPE SHOUL­DERS: At the beg of each of the next 6(10-8) rows bind off 11(7-9) sts. Bind off remaining 34(36-42) sts.

PATTERN STITCH FOR LEFT FRONT: Work in stockinette st, using colors as follows:
Row 1: 18(20-22) Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts, 36(38-40) Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts, 8 Brown sts.
Row 2: 8 Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts, 36(38-40) Brown sts,
4 Turquoise sts, 18(20-22) Brown sts.
Repeat these 2 rows 5 times more.
Rows 13 through 18: Work in Turquoise only.
Rows 19 through 30: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
Row 31: 10(12-14) Gray sts, 8 Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts,
8 Brown sts, 20(22-24) Gray, 8 Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts, 8 Brown sts.
Row 32: 8 Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts, 8 Brown sts, 20(22-24) Gray sts, 8 Brown sts, 4 Turquoise sts, 8 Brown sts, 10(12-14) Gray sts.
Repeat these 2 rows 14 times more. Repeat these 60 rows for pattern stitch.

LEFT FRONT: Using Brown, cast on 70(74-78) sts. Work in pattern st until pieces measures approximately 8(8¼-8½) inches, ending with Row 18(20-22). SHAPE ARMHOLE: Still following pattern st, at arm edge bind off 10(11-11) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 6 times. Work even on 54(57-61) sts until armhole measures 5½(5¾-6) inches. SHAPE NECK: At front edge bind off 11(12-15) sts. Bind off 2 sts at same edge 5 times. Work even on 33(35-36) sts until armhole measures 7½(7¾-8) inches. SHAPE SHOUL­DER: At arm edge bind off 11(7-9) sts 3(5-4) times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with left front, reversing pattern st and shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures 1½ inches. BUTTON-HOLE: Starting at front edge, work 3 sts; bind off next 4 sts; work to end of row. On the next row cast on 4 sts over 4 sts bound off previous row. Make 6 more buttonholes, evenly spaced—the last one to be made ¼ inch below start of neck shaping.

SLEEVES: Using Gray, cast on 64(68-72) sts. Work in stocki­nette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1 inch until there are 94(98-102) sts. Work even until piece measures 17½(18-18) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 10(11-12) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4½(4¾-5) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

LEFT FRONT FACING: Using Gray, cast on 28(30-32) sts. Work in stockinette st until piece measures 8(8¼-8½) inches, ending with a P row. K the next row, inc 1 st at end of row and repeat this inc every 1 inch 6 times more and AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 13½(14-14½) inches, SHAPE NECK: At straight edge bind off 11(12-15) sts. Bind off 2 sts at same edge 5 times. Work even on 14(15-14) sts until piece measures same length as front to shoulder. Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT FACING: Work to correspond with left
front facing, reversing shaping and forming 7 buttonholes to match buttonholes on right front.

BACK FACING: Using Gray, cast on 34(36-42) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every other row until piece measures 1¼ inches. Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Sew facings in place. Buttonhole st around each double buttonhole. Using Gray, work 2 rows s c on bottom of each sleeve. Using Brown, work 1 row s c on bottom edge of jacket. Block to size. Sew buttons on left front. Sew shoul­der pads in place.
