MATERIALS
BERNAT Fleurette—22(22-23) skeins Main Color (M C); 9(9-10) skeins of Contrasting Color (C C)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1 24 inch circular needle No. 2 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 3
10 button molds
1 pair shoulder pads
1 yd 1 inch grosgrain ribbon
1 yd 1 inch elastic

GAUGE: 7 sts = 1 inch; 10 rows = 1 inch

SKIRT

NOTE: Any changes in length of skirt are made before first dec round.

Using circular needle and M C, cast on 400(410-420) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. K round and round for 2(1-2) inches. FIRST DEC ROUND: * K 38(39-40) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—10 sts dec. Work even for 2 inches. SECOND DEC ROUND: * K 37 (38-39) sts, K 2 tog, repeat from * to end of round—10 sts dec. Continue to dec 10 sts in this manner every 2 inches, having 1 st less between dec on each dec round, until piece measures 19(22-23) inches—310(290-310) sts. On the next round dec 10 sts in same manner as before and repeat this dec round every 1 inch until piece measures 31(32-32) inches. Bind off remaining 190(200-220) sts.

JACKET

STRIPING PATTERN: Jacket is worked in stockinette st, using colors in following manner: 18 rows M C, 2 rows C C, 18 rows M C, 2 rows C C, 16 rows M C, 4 rows C C, 14 rows M C, 4 rows C C, 12 rows M C, 6 rows C C, 10 rows M C, 8 rows C C, 8 rows M C, 8 rows C C, 6 rows M C, 8 rows C C, 6 rows M C, 8 rows C C, 6 rows M C, 10 rows C C, 4 rows M C, (start of armhole and sleeve cap at this point) 10 rows C C, 4 rows M C, 12 rows C C, 4 rows M C, 14 rows C C, 2 rows M C, 16 rows C C, 2 rows M C. Balance of jacket is worked in C C.

BACK: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 116(124- 130) sts. Work in striping pattern, dec 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 12 times. Work even on 92(100-106) sts until piece measures 10 inches. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every ¾ inch 9 times more. Work even on 112(120-126) sts until piece measures ap­proximately 18 inches, ending with 4 rows M C. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6(7-7) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4(5-5) times. Work even on 92(96-102) sts until armholes measure 7½(7¾-8) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 6(8-6) rows bind off 10(8-11) sts. Bind off remaining 32(32-36) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 67(71-75) sts. Work in striping pattern, dec 1 st at arm edge every ¾ inch 12 times. Work even on 55(59-63) sts until piece measures 10 inches. On the next row inc 1 st at arm edge and repeat this inc every ¾ inch 9 times more. Work even on 65(69-73) sts until piece measures approximately 18 inches, ending with same row as back at armhole. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 9(11-12) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 5 times. SHAPE NECK: Dec 1 st at front edge every 3rd row until there are 30(32-33) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7½(7¾-8) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 10(8-11) sts 3(4-3) times.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with left front, re­versing shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures ¾ inch. BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 3 sts; bind off next 5 sts; work to end of row. On the next row cast on 5 sts over 5 sts bound off previous row. Make 9 more buttonholes, evenly spaced—the last one to be made ½ inch below start of neck shaping.

STRIPING PATTERN FOR SLEEVES: Work in stockinette st, using colors in following manner: 2(6-6) rows M C, * 8 rows C C, 8 rows M C, repeat from * to start of cap shaping.

SLEEVES: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 60(64-68) sts. Work in striping pattern for 2 inches. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every ¾ inch until there are 86(92-98) sts. Work even until piece meas­ures approximately 17½(18-18) inches, ending with a M C stripe. SHAPE CAP: Working in same striping pattern as back from start of armhole, at the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 9(10-11) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4½(4¾-5) inches. At the beg of each of the next 4(4-6) rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

LEFT COLLAR: Using C C, cast on 5 sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st at beg of every K row until there are 18 sts. Con­tinue to inc 1 st at beg of every K row and AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at beg of every P row until piece measures 8½(8¾-9) inches. Put all sts on a holder.

RIGHT COLLAR: Work to correspond with left collar, being sure to reverse all shaping.

FINISHING: Using M C, work 2 rows s c around top and bottom edges of skirt. Work a beading at inside top of skirt. Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves, being sure to match pattern. Using M C, work 2 rows s c on bottom edge of jacket. Weave tog sts of collar from hold­ers. Sew collar in place. Using C C, work 2 rows s c around collar. Block skirt and jacket. Run elastic, cut to waist measurement, through beading and sew ends tog. Button­hole st around each buttonhole. Face each front with rib­bon. Using C C, cover each button mold in s c. Sew buttons on left front. Sew in shoulder pads.
