ON 2 NEEDLES

MATERIAL:
1 skein Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles No. 3 and No. 4
1 stitchholder

Instructions are written for ladies sizes and in parenthesis are men's sizes medium and large.

   Cast on 40 (40-48) sts. with No. 3 needles for cuff and work back and forth in ribbing of K1, P1 for 3 inch, (all sizes). Then change to No. 4 needles and stock. st. and work even for 4 (6-8) rows. Start to incr. for Thumb:
   1st increase row: K19 (K21-K23) sts., increase 1 st., K2, incr. 1 st., K 19 (K21-K23). P next row back.
   2nd increase row: K19 (K21-K23), incr. 1 st., K4, incr. 1 st., K19 (K21-K23). P next row back.
   3rd incr. row: K19 (K21-K23), incr. 1 st., K6, incr. 1 st., K19 (K21-K23). P next row back.
   Continue to increase 2 sts. every K row for thumb gore having 2 more sts. between the increases until 8 (10-12) sts. are in thumb gore. Slip the sts. on each side of thumb gore to a stitchholder. Work on the thumb sts. only in stock. st. and cast on 1 st. at the beg. of the next 2 rows (for all sizes). Work even for 2½ (2¾-3) inch. Decrease for tip: K2 tog. across next row. Break yarn, leaving a 6 inch end, thread a tapestry needle with this end and run twice through rem. sts. pull sts. tog. tightly and sew up thumb on wrong side. Slip the sts. from holder on to a needle again and K across them picking up 4 sts. (for all sizes) across thumb base. Work in stock. st. for 3¾ (4-4½) inch above thumb. Decrease 4 sts. for medium and 2 sts. for large size at even intervals across last row. There are 42 (42-48) sts., on needle. Start to dec. for tip. * K4, K2 tog. repeat from * all across. P back. Next row: * K3, K2 tog. repeat from * all across, P back. Next row: * K2, K2 tog. repeat from * all across, P back. Next row: * K1, K2 tog. repeat from * all across, P back. K2 tog. all across row. Finish tip as thumb and sew up side seam on wrong side.
   Work other mitten to correspond.
