MATERIAL:
1 skein Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein)
1 set sock needles each No. 2 and No. 4
1 stitch holder

PATTERN:

1st and 2nd round: * K 2, P 2 repeat from * around.

3rd and 4th round: * P 2, K 2 repeat from * around.

Cast on 40 sts. with No. 2 needles, join being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing K 1, P 1 for 2 ½ inch. Change to No. 4 needles and work in pattern for 1 ¼ inch. Now start to increase for thumb at beginning of next round: incr. 1 st., K 2, incr. 1 st., work to end of round in pattern. Work 2 rounds even, keeping the 4 sts. for thumb gore in plain K and the rem. sts. in pattern. Next round: incr. 1 st., K 4, incr. 1 st., work to end of round in pattern. Work 2 rounds even, keeping the 6 sts. for thumb gore in plain K and the rem. sts. in pattern. Continue to work this way incr. 1 st. on each side of thumb gore every 3rd round having 2 more sts. between the increases until there are 12 sts. in thumb gore. Slip these sts. to a holder, cast on 2 sts., join and work even for 3 inch. or any desired length, end with 3rd row of pattern. Start to decr. for tip: starting over thumb, K 2 tog., work 16 sts. in pattern, P 2 tog., K 2 tog. work 16 sts. in pattern, P 2 tog. Work 1 round even, keeping pattern. Next round: K 2 tog., work 14 sts. in pattern, P 2 tog., K 2 tog., work 14 sts. in pattern, P 2 tog. Work 1 round even, keeping pattern. Next round: P 2 tog., work 12 sts. in pattern, K 2 tog., P 2 tog., work 12 sts. in pattern, K 2 tog. Work 1 round even. Continue to work this way decr. 4 sts. every other round until 16 sts. are left over. Weave sts. tog. Thumb: Slip sts. from holder back to 2 needles, attach yarn and K across these 12 sts, with 3rd needle, pick up 1 st. in corner, pick up 2 sts. on 2 cast on sts, pick up 1 st. in other corner (16 sts. in all). Work even for 2 ¼ inch. K 2 tog. across row, break yarn leaving about 6 inch. Thread a tapestry needle with this end and run twice through rem. sts., pull sts. tog. and fasten off. Work other mitten to correspond and steam lightly.
