MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Knitting Worsted (4 oz skein) - 4(4-5-5) skeins
OR
Columbia-Minerva Calypso Germantown Knitting Worsted (2 or 4 oz skein) - 16(18-20-22) ozs

Knitting Needles: 1 pair each "Boye" Sizes 5 and 8, 1 "Boye" cable needle and 1 "Boye" steel cro­chet hook Size 0

Gauge: Pattern Stitch on Size 8 needles - 5½ sts to 1 inch; 6 rows to 1 inch

BACK: With Size 5 needles cast on 86(92-96-104) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 2 inches, inc'ing 1 st at end of last row on Size 10 only. Change to Size 8 needles and work in pat as follows: Row 1 - Right side: P 3(2-4-1), * sl next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold in back, K 2, then K the 2 sts from cable needle for cable twist, P 3, repeat from * across, end­ing cable twist, then P 3(2-4-1). Row 2: K 3(2-4-1), * P 4, K 3, repeat from * across, ending P 4, then K 3(2-4-1). Row 3: P 3(2-4-1), * K 4, P 3, repeat from * across, ending K 4, then P 3(2-4-1). Row 4: Same as Row 2. Repeat these 4 rows for pat. Work until back measures 12(12-12½-12½) inches from start. Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 4(3-4-3) times - 71(78-80-90) sts on needle. Work until armholes measure 8(8-8½-8½) inches straight above bound-off sts at underarm. Shoulders and Neck: Bind off 7(7-8-9) sts at armhole edge, work next 16(18-18-20) sts, sl rem'ing sts onto st holder. Working one side only, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row twice AND AT THE SAME TIME bind off 7(8-8-9) sts at armhole edge twice. Leaving center 25(28-28-32) sts on holder, work other side to correspond.

LEFT FRONT: With Size 5 needles cast on 51(53-57-59) sts. Row 1 - Right side: Work in ribbing of P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across to last 8 sts, K 8 for front border. Row 2: P 8, work in ribbing to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches, inc'ing 1 st at end of last row on Size 14 only, ending with Row 2. Change to Size 8 needles and work in pat as follows: Row 1: P 1(3-1-2), * twist cable on next 4 sts, P 3, repeat from * across to last 8 sts, K 8. Row 2: P 8, * K 3, P 4, repeat from * across, ending K 1(3-1-2). Row 3: P 1(3-1-2), * K 4, P 3, repeat from * across to last 8 sts, K 8. Row 4: Same as Row 2. Keeping the 8 sts of front border in St St, work in cable pat until front measures same as back to underarm.

Armhole: Bind off 4(4-7-5) sts at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 2(4-5-3) times - 45(45- 46-51) sts on needle. Work until front edge measures  17½(18-18½-19) inches from start. Neck: At front edge work 12(12-12-14) sts, sl these sts onto st holder, work to end of row. Bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 6(5-5-5) times. Work until armhole measures same as on back. Shoulder: Bind off 7(7-8-9) sts at armhole edge 3(1-3-3) times, then on Size 12 only bind off 8 sts every other row twice. Place markers for 6 buttons on front border - 7th button is on neckband - with first marker 1 inch above lower edge and 6th marker about 2 inches below neck.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to Left Front, reversing the shaping and working buttonholes oppo­site markers as follows: On right side of work, K 3, bind off next 2 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.

SLEEVES: With Size 5 needles cast on 46(46-50-50) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 2 inches, inc'ing 4(4-7-7) sts evenly across last row - 50(50-57-57) sts on needle. Change to Size 8 needles and work in pat as follows: Row 1 - Right side: P 2, * twist cable, P 3, repeat from * across, ending twist cable, then P 2. Row 2: K 2, * P 4, K 3, repeat from * across, ending P 4, K 2. Continue in pat, inc'ing 1 st each side every 4th row 3(9-5-8) times, then every 6th row 8(4-7-5) times more - 72(76-81-83) sts on needle, working added sts in pat, twisting cable on every completed K 4 panel. Work until sleeve measures 14½(14½-15-15) inches. Cap of Sleeve: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 3(4-2-4) times. Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 20(20-24-22) rows. Bind off rem'ing 18(20-21-23) sts.

Sew shoulder seams.

NECKBAND: With Size 8 needles, right side facing and starting at right front border, pick up and K 97(102-102-110) sts around neck including sts on hold­ers. Row 1 - Wrong side: P. Row 2 - First dec row: Sizes 10, 12 and 14 only K 7(5-5), * K 2 tog, K 7(8-8), repeat from * across, ending K 2 tog, then K 7(5-5) - 87(92-92) sts on needle. Size 16 only: K 12, K 2 tog, K 9, K 2 tog, K 15, * K 2 tog, K 5, repeat from * 3 times more, K 2 tog, K 15, K 2 tog, K 9, K 2 tog, K 12 - 101 sts on needle. All Sizes: Row 3: P. Row 4: Work 7th buttonhole as before. Row 5: P. Row 6 - 2nd dec row: K 7(9-9-9), * K 2 tog, K 6(6-6-8), repeat from * across, ending K 2 tog, then K 6(9-9- 10) - 77(82-82-92) sts on needle. Row 7: Change to Size 5 needles and P. Rows 8 and 9: K 1 row, P 1 row. Bind off tightly.

Sew sleeves in place, then sew underarm and sleeve seams. Work 1 row of sc along front borders and neck, inc'ing at corners to keep work flat. Face front bor­ders with grosgrain ribbon, working around buttonholes.
